FINCH – In these troubling times, it is heart warming to see people giving back to their communities. On June 11, the Community Food Share Finch Food Cupboard received a donation of over 125 pounds of food collected under the guidance of guider Chris Chevalier from the 1st Long Sault Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers Unit.
The Community Food Share Finch Food Cupboard is located in the Sunday School at Chalmers United church located on Church Street in Finch. It is open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays. In a telephone interview with The Chesterville Record, Chevalier explained the group had recently held a virtual camp weekend as part of their program. She described how the group met on Zoom to plan the virtual event which included a service project. There were several options of service provided to the camp participants with Chevalier’s project being a food drive in Ingleside, which resulted in the donation to the CFS Finch Food Cupboard.
CFS director Ernie Coumont, who with Gary Nugent volunteer as coordinators at the CFS Finch Food Cupboard, expressed his appreciation for the donation in an email to The Chesterville Record stating, “I feel the 1st Long Sault Girl Guides and their leaders deserve some recognition for the initiative and work that went into collecting the food at the times, such as we are going through with the COVID-19 crisis.”
Chevalier commented as the interview finished that the 1st Long Sault Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers are also seeking leaders and girls to participate in their program. She explained there is a need for “Guiders in Cornwall, especially French-speaking ones.” More information on Guiding in Canada can be found at www.girlguides.ca.
Carolyn Thompson Goddard, grew up in Chesterville and attended North Dundas District High School. After completing her BA in Political Science at Carleton University she has worked as a medical secretary and library technician. In 2020 she graduated from Algonquin College with a diploma in Journalism and has been a reporter and column writer for The Chesterville Record for over 10 years.
