WESTPORT—The Winchester Hawks played a pair of games this past weekend as they welcomed the Alexandria Glens on Friday night and travelled to Westport on Saturday night to take on the Rideaus.

Rideaus 9 Hawks 1

The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Westport Arena on Sat., Feb. 22, to take on the Rideaus in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a 6-3 win over the Alexandria Glens the previous night, and looked to string together a pair of wins heading into their final week of the regular season. It was the Hawks’ annual Father/Son road trip where the fathers hop on the bus to watch their sons play. 

It was an important game for the Rideaus as they are in a dog fight with the Carleton Place Canadians for first place in the Richardson Division. The Rideaus opened the scoring at 7:43 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Rideaus added two more unanswered goals at 10:35 and 12:40 and took 3-0 lead into the first intermission. 

It was all Rideaus in the second period as well, scoring at 2:48 and again with 1:48 remaining in the middle frame on the power play. The Rideaus took a 5-0 lead into the second intermission. 

The Rideaus wasted little time scoring in the third period, just 26 seconds in, and again just eight seconds later to make it 7-0. The Rideaus added another goal at 1:51 but the Hawks finally got on the score board when Nathan Lassenba scored his second goal of the season from Bradley Wells and Ryan Nielson at 8:10. 

The Rideaus closed out the scoring at 10:37 taking the game 9-1. The Rideaus outshot the Hawks 47-28. 

Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making a 22 saves on 29 shots. He was replaced by Cole Defazio who made 16 saves on 18 shots.

Hawks 6 Glens 3

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Alexandria Glens to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Feb. 21, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in fifth place in the Martin Division, eight points behind the Casselman Vikings in fourth place. There was little left to decide playoff-wise as the Hawks will take on the Vikings in the first round; a best two-out-of-three to see who will move on to the second round versus the first place Ottawa West Golden Knights. 

The Hawks got on the board first when Kyle Kuehni ripped home his 24th goal of the season from Danny Johnson and Ryan Nielson at 9:48 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Hawks increased their lead to two when Logan Schmidt snuck in off the blue line and snapped home his third of the season from Marco Haw and Kyle Fleming at 10:53 of the power play. 

The Glens cut the deficit in half when affiliated player and Finch native, Landon Brownlee scored his first CCHL2 goal at 16:37. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. 

The Hawks owned the second period scoring at 5:01 as Haw scored his 14th of the season from Noah Fraser and Colby Schroeder making it 3-1. The Hawks made it 4-1 when Fleming lit the lamp for his 22nd of the season while shorthanded at 6:55. 

The Hawks added another at 9:45 as Eric Vitale scored his team-leading 30th of the season from Johnson and Kuehni. The Hawks took a 5-1 lead into the second intermission. The Glens scored a pair of goals at 1:57 on the power play and 9:22 to move to within two. 

The Hawks closed out the scoring at 15:03 as Nielson scored his eighth of the season from Vitale and Johnson. The Hawks took the game 6-3, moving to within six points of the Vikings in fourth place. The Glens outshot the Hawks 42-40. 

Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Cole Defazio making 39 saves.
