WINCHESTER—The Winchester Hawks played three games this week as they travelled to Ottawa on Thursday night to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights, welcomed the Casselman Vikings on Friday night and the Embrun Panthers on Sunday afternoon.

Panthers 5 Hawks 2

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Embrun Panthers to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Sun., Jan. 26, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in fifth place in the Martin Division, six points behind the Casselman Vikings in fourth place, and nine points behind the Panthers in third place. The Panthers sat just one point behind the Ottawa Jr. Canadians in second place. 

The Panthers opened the scoring at 6:55 of the first period as Riley Carisse scored his fourth goal of the season from Maverick Laurie and Eric Skyba on the power play taking a 1-0 lead. 

The Hawks tied the game when captain, Kyle Kuehni lit the lamp for his 20th of the season from Ryan Nielson and Danny Johnson on the power play at 9:30. The teams took a one-all draw into the first intermission. 

The Panthers retook the lead when Matthieu Brennan scored his fourth of the season from Tristan Taillefer and Marshall Drevniok just 49 seconds into the second period. The Panthers took a two-goal lead when Brennan scored his second of the game and fifth of the season from Carter Peck and Luke Peck at 17:09.

The Panthers took a three-goal lead when John Mahoney snapped home his third of the season from Taillefer and Carisse with just 34 seconds remaining in the middle frame. The Panthers took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. 

The Hawks got to within two as Johnson scored his 12th of the campaign at 3:37 of the third period from Colby Schroeder and Kuehni. The Hawks pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker with about 90 seconds remaining in regulation but that didn’t work out as planned as the Panthers put the icing on the cake with 25 seconds remaining, as their goalie Marco Latassa scored in the empty cage, becoming the first goalie to score a goal in the CCHL2 this season. The Panthers took them 5-2. 

With the win, the Panthers jumped back into second place over the Canadians. The Panthers outshot the Hawks 60-43. 

Picking up the win in the Panthers’ goal was Latassa making 40 saves and suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries.

Vikings 7 Hawks 6 (OT)

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Casselman Vikings to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Jan. 24, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in fifth place, four points behind the Vikings who sat in fourth place. 

The Vikings opened the scoring just 2:52 into the first period when Joshua Desjardins scored his first goal of the season from Samuel Lacroix and Adam Paquette taking a 1-0 lead. The Vikings made it 2-0 when François Drouin scored his 21st of the season from Shane Spencer and Shawn Patterson at 10:24. 

Patterson scored his 11th of the season from Alexandre Charlebois and Samuel Labre on the power play at 13:18 giving the Vikings a three-goal lead. The Hawks cut the deficit to two when Kyle Kuehni scored his 18th of the season from Colby Schroeder at 16:35. The Vikings took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The Hawks got to within one as Eric Vitale scored his 23rd of the season from Kyle Fleming and Nolan Guertin at 2:33 of the second period. The Hawks knotted the affair at three when Kuehni scored his second of the game and 19th of the season from Vitale on the power play at 13:29. 

The Vikings retook the lead when Patterson scored his second of the game and 12th of the campaign from Spencer and Drouin at 13:57. The Vikings restored a two-goal lead when Mathieu Talbot slapped home his 21st of the season from Frédérick Gagnier and Paquette at 14:10. 

The Hawks answered at 16:16 when Morgan Walk scored his fifth of the season from Bradley Wells and Colby Schroeder closing the gap to one. The Hawks tied the game just 36 seconds later when Danny Johnson scored his 11th of the season from affiliated player, Adam Barkley, and Noah Fraser. 

The teams took a five-all draw in the second intermission. The Vikings retook the lead when Patterson completed his hat trick at 7:58 unassisted for his 13th of the season. 

The Hawks tied the game with 2:18 remaining in regulation as Vitale scored his second of the game and 24th of the season from Noah Fraser. Neither team was able to score before the end of regulation so the game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. 

In the extra frame it was the Vikings’ Drouin ending the game with his 22nd of the season and second of the game from Charlebois at 2:46 in overtime. The Vikings took the game 7-6. The Vikings extended their lead over the Hawks to six points with the win. The Hawks outshot the Vikings 53-48. 

Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 47 saves and suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Cole Defazio making 41 saves.

Golden Knights 7 Hawks 1

The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Barbara Ann Scott Arena in Ottawa on Thurs., Jan. 23 to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in fifth place in the Martin Division while the Golden Knights sat in the top seed. 

The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 14:13 of the first period on the power play taking a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights took a two-goal lead at 17:26 and took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. 

The Golden Knights took a 3-0 just 1:30 into the second period while shorthanded. The Golden Knights took the 3-0 lead into the second intermission. The Golden Knights made it a four goal difference just 37 seconds into the third period and made it 5-0 at 5:44 on the power play. 

The Golden Knights kept the pressure on the Hawks and took a six-goal lead at 6:05 but the Hawks finally got on the scoreboard at 9:24 as Danny Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season from Kyle Kuehni and Cole Defazio. 

The Golden Knights wrapped up the scoring at 16:38 taking the game 7-1. The Golden Knights outshot the Hawks 42-23. 

Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries who made 33 saves on 39 shot and was replaced by Defazio who made two saves on three shots.
