WINCHESTER—The Winchester Hawks played two games this past weekend as they travelled to Ottawa on Thursday night to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights and welcomed the Athens Aeros on Friday night.
Hawks 4 Aeros 3 (OT)
The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Athens Aeros to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Nov. 29, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in fifth place, eight points behind a slew of teams at the top of the Martin Division. They were in desperate need of a win, as the surging Char-Lan Rebels sat just three points back.
The Aeros got on the board first scoring at 11:56 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Aeros made it 2-0 at 12:28 and took that lead into the first intermission.
The Hawks cut the deficit in half, as Kyle Green scored his sixth of the season from Nicolas Corry and Shane Dickie at 6:16 of the second period.
The Aeros restored their two-goal lead at 12:20 but the Hawks got that back as Danny Johnson scored his fifth of the season from Ryan Nielson and Marco Haw on the power play at 16:44. The Hawks tied the game when Noah Weatherall scored his second of the campaign from Kyle Fleming and Nielson. The teams took a three-all draw into the second intermission.
Neither team was able to score in the third period so the game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. The Hawks’ affiliated player, Ty White, scored his first of the season at 3:02 from Nielson to become the overtime hero.
The Hawks scored the victory 4-3 in a hard-fought battle against the winless Aeros for a much needed two points. With the win, the Hawks move to within six points of the fourth place Ottawa Jr. Canadians and pulled five points ahead of the Char-Lan Rebels for the final playoff spot.
The Hawks outshot the Aeros 54-22. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making 19 saves.
Golden Knights 4 Hawks 0
The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Barbara Ann Scott Arena in Ottawa to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Thurs., Nov. 28. The Hawks sat in fifth place in the Martin Division, eight points behind a cluster of teams battling for top spot.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 18:43 of the first period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Golden Knights made it 2-0 at 7:57 of the second period and 3-0 at 14:11. The Golden Knights took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Golden Knights made it 4-0 at 4:20 of the third period and hung on for the victory. The Golden Knights outshot the Hawks 42-28. Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Cole Defazio making 38 saves.
