CHESTERVILLE – Carol Johnson, president of the Chesterville and District Agricultural Society, was pleased with the turnout at the society’s annual general meeting held on Sun., Nov. 24. The potluck luncheon was held at the Dundas Federation of Agriculture’s meeting room, located in the Nelson Laprade Centre in Chesterville.
Johnson said the society is off to a great start. “There are a lot of great ideas floating around and a lot of enthusiasm.”
Planning is currently underway for an online fundraising auction and the 2020 Chesterville Fair is planned for the Aug. 28 to Aug. 30 weekend.
After lunch, Holly Byker from the Winchester Agricultural Research Station, spoke to the 16 people in attendance.
Johnson explained that the presentation centred on the uniqueness of our area and the importance of having “research relevant to our needs here in Eastern Ontario.” She noted “it was also very encouraging to hear that not only do they have a summer student program” but also encourage local high school students to participate in the research. The research involves test plots and data collection.
The 2019/2020 CDAS board of directors will include 10 directors and six associate directors with Carol Johnson continuing as president and Ann Vanderlind as vice president. Kelsey Smith and Scott McLean will remain as interim secretary and treasurer until the positions are filled.

Carolyn Thompson Goddard, grew up in Chesterville and attended North Dundas District High School. After completing her BA in Political Science at Carleton University she has worked as a medical secretary and library technician. In 2020 she graduated from Algonquin College with a diploma in Journalism and has been a reporter and column writer for The Chesterville Record for over 10 years.
