Something cool for a hot evening

SOUTH MOUNTAIN – After the remarkable, record-breaking success in Morewood last week, the pressure was on South Mountain to keep the torch bright with their run at the Meet Me on Main Street series on Wed., July 10.

According to recreation co- ordinator Brandon Cousineau, the numbers continued to soar high throughout the event series, adding that more people arrived later in the evening when the temperatures lowered.

“Generally later in the night, things tend to cool down,” he said. “Generally when it’s over 30 degrees, people come out when it cools down.”

Live music from Marleen Fawcett entertained the crowd with Fawcett singing old favourite tunes with her iconic talent. Chesterville’s Snack Shack and Hallville’s Loughlin’s Country Store provided the crowd with fresh food, while Winchester’s Simply Baked offered up dessert options in the form of baked goods.

Magician Kevin Smith dazzled the audience with his magical talent, making the crowd see something that wasn’t what it appeared to be. Guessing what card someone picked out of a deck of cards is one thing, but having an audience volunteer write their name down on the card and making that very card appear in Smith’s wallet – the crowd was shaking their head in disbelief.

Unfortunately, this week’s Meet Me on Main Street was missing a certain something for kids to have fun on. Southgate Church had a prior event to go to that night and was unable to attend South Mountain’s event with their popular bouncy castle.

“They had other plans,” said Cousineau. “We did ask them at the beginning of the year but they did have previous arrangements with another event. However, they will be at each and every other event in the Meet Me on Main Street.”

Breweries Rurban and Windmill kept the crowd cool with their signature brews, along with Smokie Ridge Vineyard offering a selection of wines to the crowd. Newcomer distillery, King’s Lock was a very popular choice for residents for bringing a new flavour and mixture to everyone’s taste buds.

“King’s Lock is located right outside of Johnstown,” said Cousineau. “They use organic ingredients, kind of going along with the micro- breweries and just what this event is all about, local vendors.”

Meet Me on Main Street with be back tonight (Wed., July 17) in Hallville on Kerrs Ridge Road. Branded will be performing the live entertainment while Étienne Brûlé and Windmill breweries will be keeping everyone hydrated.
