Getting ready for a fun-filled fundraiser
It was a sunny afternoon when a group of participants, supporters and volunteers for the upcoming walk, run and play fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society gathered in Arnold Bethune Memorial Park in Long Sault. Organizer Dave Smith commented how the event, planned for August 24, will provide people of all ages the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of fun in the outdoors while raising money for a worthy cause. LONG SAULT – Dave Smith of South Stormont is planning an afternoon of activities at Arnold Bethune Memorial Park in Long Sault on August 24 which will raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The event is being held between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and will include a 3-pitch coed softball tournament, coed volleyball tournament and the opportunity to walk or run along a homemade track in the park. Smith explained there will be live music, a refreshment tent, family fun zone, inflatable rides and many other activities to enjoy during this community event. 

Following the afternoon fundraiser, Smith has arranged an evening event at the same venue which includes an outdoor barbecue dinner and dance billed as ‘A Tribute to the Stars’ and featuring several local tribute artists.

During an information session at Bethune Park on July 7, Smith explained that registrations for the two tournaments are beginning to come in. Invitations for local municipalities to participate in the event have been extended, as cancer knows no boundaries. He expects some municipalities will send teams to participate in the tournaments and is hopeful local businesses or organizations will follow suit. 

Smith expressed his gratitude to local sponsors and Molson’s for their support as well as the many volunteers who have stepped up to assist in the planning of this event. The Paquette family of Long Sault were at the information session, expressing their willingness to volunteer at the event. Isabelle Paquette who attends Longue Sault Public School mentioned how volunteering “makes me feel good inside” with her parents explaining how Smith approached the family to help out and “wherever we are needed, we will go.”
