ARNPRIOR—The Winchester Hawks played two games this past weekend as they welcomed the Embrun Panthers on Friday night and travelled to Arnprior on Saturday night to take on the Packers.
Hawks 4 Packers 3 (OT)
The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior on Sat., Jan. 26, to take on the Panthers in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a much needed win over the Embrun Panthers, tying them at 28 points in sixth place and got to within four points of the Char-Lan Rebels in fifth, in the Martin Division.
The Packers got off to a quick start scoring three first-period goals at 3:21, 4:21 and at 17:04, all at even strength. The Packers took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Hawks got one back just 2:18 into the second period as Kyle Fleming scored his fourth goal of the season from William MacDonald and Eric DeRepentigny to make it 3-1.
The Hawks got to within one as Bradley Wells scored his second of the season from River Gull and Brady Meldrum at 15:23. The Packers took a slim 3-2 lead into the second intermission. The Hawks tied the game at 16:51 as Colby Schroeder scored his third of the season from Cameron Cotnam and Meldrum.
Neither team was able to persuade the puck to the back of the net before the end of regulation so the game headed to a five-minute three on three overtime frame. The Hawks completed the comeback just 1:19 into overtime as Cotnam scored his sixth of the season from Fleming taking the game 4-3, winning their second in as many games.
With the win the Hawks temporally moved ahead of the Panthers for sole possession of sixth place but the Panthers eventually beat the Char-Lan Rebels later in the evening; so the team remained tied with 30 points each.
The shots on goal were tied at 35. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Brent Pledge-Dickson making 32 saves.
Hawks 6 Panthers 5 (OT)
The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Embrun Panthers to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Jan. 25, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game in seventh place in the Martin Division just one point behind the Panthers in sixth and eight points out of the last playoff spot.
The Hawks opened the scoring when Danny Johnson scored his 16th goal of the season from Hunter Randell just 1:42 into the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers knotted the game when Marc Brosseau scored his 11th of the season from Nathan Brown and Alexandre Caron at 6:18. The teams took the one-all draw into the first intermission.
The Panthers took their first lead of the game when Cayden Martin scored his sixth of the season from Matthieu Brennan just 15 seconds into the second frame.
The Hawks got back to even when Miguel Pare scored his 13th of the season from Kyle Fleming and Alex Torres-Gill at 7:01 but the Panthers retook the lead at the 14-minute mark as Brosseau scored his second of the game and 12th of the season from Caron and Alex Rossides.
The Panthers took a two-goal lead when Robert Beaudoin scored his fifth of the season, while shorthanded and with just 20 seconds remaining in the middle frame. The Panthers took a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Hawks got back to within one as Brady Meldrum scored his first of the season just 1:35 into the third period also while shorthanded. The Hawks tied the game when Eric DeRepentigny scored his sixth of the season from Fleming at 5:19.
The Panthers regained the lead when Caron scored his sixth of the season from Brown and Rossides on the power play at 15:39. The Hawks tied the game when Colby Byrnes-Shaw scored his fifth of the season from Kyle Kuehni and Johnson with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation.
Neither team was able to score before the final buzzer sounded, so the game headed to a five-minute three on three overtime period. The Hawks ended the game at 2:08 of the extra frame as Johnson scored his second of the game and 17th of the season from Colby Schroeder and River Gull.
The Hawks took the game 6-5 but allowed the Panthers a single point which made the two teams tied at 28 points in the standings. The Panthers outshot the Hawks 41-32.
Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Brent Pledge-Dickson making 36 saves and suffering the loss in the Panthers goal was Joshua Ivanski making 26 saves.
