ATHENS—The Winchester Hawks had two road games this past weekend as they travelled to Perth on Friday night to take on the Blue Wings and onto Athens on Saturday night as they took on the Aeros.
Hawks 6 Aeros 3: The Winchester Hawks travelled to Centre 76 in Athens on Sat., Oct. 6, to take on the Aeros in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a tough 5-2 loss to the Perth Blue Wings and looked for positives and possibly a win.
The Hawks opened the scoring when Kyle Kuehni scored his first goal of the season from Graeme Buffone and Miguel Pare at 11:37 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The Hawks took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Hawks took a two-goal lead when Pare scored his first of the season from Kuehni and Isaac Kelly just 2:04 into the second period. The Hawks made it 3-0 when Kieran Gaynor scored his first goal of the season from Dillon Clemen and Ryan Neilson on the power play at 8:38.
The Hawks kept the pressure on and took a 4-0 lead when Dakota Seaman scored his first of the season from Neilson and William MacDonald on another power play at 15:24.
The Aeros finally got on the score sheet with 49 seconds remaining in the middle frame. The Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. The Hawks made it 5-1 when Gaynor scored his second goal of the game from MacDonald at 6:55 of the third period.
The Aeros answered with a pair of goals at 9:01 and 17:25 on the power play to make it 5-3. The Aeros pulled their goaltender in favour of an extra attacker but the Hawks made them pay for that move as Kuehni found the abandoned cage with 1:38 remaining from Pare and Kelly.
The Hawks went on to take the game 6-3 for their second win of the season moving into sixth place ahead of the Embrun Panthers and the Richmond Royals and sit just one point back of the Ottawa West Golden Knights.
The Hawks dominated the shot clock 43-32. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Brent Pledge Dickson making 29 saves on 32 shots.
Blue Wings 5 Hawks 2: The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Perth Arena on Fri., Oct. 5, to take on the Blue Wings in the CCHL2. The Hawks sat at the bottom of the Martin Division with just one win on the season but could leap frog over the sixth place Embrun Panthers with a win.
The Blue Wings went into the game in second place in the Richardson Division. The teams battled to a scoreless first period with the Blue Wings outshooting the Hawks 12-7. The Blue Wings opened the scoring just 3:17 into the second period and made it 2-0 at 6:09.
The Blue Wings pounded 30 shots at the Hawks’ goalie, Darien Johnson but only took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Hawks cut the deficit in half when Chesterville native, Cameron Cotnam scored his first goal in the CCHL2 at 4:59 from Brady Meldrum and Dawson Maisonneuve.
The Blue Wings restored their two-goal lead at 6:23 but again the Hawks made it a one-goal game when Colby Byrnes-Shaw scored his first goal of the season from William MacDonald and Miguel Pare at 9:15.
The Blue Wings made it 4-2 at 13:25. The Hawks pulled Johnson in favour of an extra attacker but it was the Blue Wings who found the empty net with just 32 seconds remaining in the game.
The Blue Wings took the game 5-2 handing the Hawks their fifth loss of the season. Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Johnson making 52 saves on 56 shots.
Up next: The Winchester Hawks travel to the J. R. Brisson Complex in Casselman on Thurs., Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks then welcome the Richmond Royals to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Oct. 12, at 8:15 p.m. and travel to the Palais des Sports in Embrun to take on the Panthers on Sun., Oct. 14, at 1:30 p.m.
