CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League battled through the sweltering heat this week with two games. Red welcomed Green in the opening game on Thursday night and Yellow played host to Blue.
Red 4 Green 1: In the opening game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thurs., July 5, Red played host to Green at the Chesterville Arena. Red went into the game in second place but will not be able to catch up to Blue who sat in first, while Green sat in the gallows of the league with just one win in the season.
Red opened the scoring at 8:53 of the first period as Lesley Ann Tupper rifled one to the back of the net from Shaelyn Shay and Emma Grady to take a 1-0 lead. Red hung on to the 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
Red made it 2-0 when Kaila Beckstead sniped one from Tupper just 2:22 into the second period and made it 3-0 at 11:39 as Beckstead scored her second of the game from Jessica Rutley and Tupper.
Green got one back with just 27 seconds remaining in the middle frame as Selena Shane snuck one home from Marissa Imrie but trailed 3-1 heading into the third period. Beckstead completed her hat trick just 1:10 into the third period unassisted to make it 4-1. The pace of the game in the third period was slow due to the heat as Red hung on to take the game 4-1.
Picking up the win in Red’s goal in her first game in this position was Kim Elliott and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin.
Blue 4 Yellow 2: In the second game of the night, Yellow welcomed Blue. Blue went into the game undefeated but only had five regulars in the lineup. They picked up Shaelyn Shay and Katie Currie from Red to fill their roster. With the short handed Blue team, it was Yellow’s chance to hand them their first loss of the season.
Blue opened the scoring at 3:01 into the first period when Jaclyn Crump pounded one to the back of the net from Carly Crump to take a 1-0 lead. Blue made it 2-0 when Jaclyn Crump scored her second of the game from Shaelyn Shay and Carly Crump at the seven-minute mark. Blue took the 2-0 lead into the second period.
Blue increased their lead to three as Shay slapped one home from Jaclyn Crump and Carly Crump at 11:50 of the middle frame. Neither team was able to score before the buzzer sounded to end the second period.
Yellow mounted a comeback late in the third period taking advantage of a tired Blue squad as Janice Casselman slapped one home from Laura Melenhorst with just 2:55 remaining. Yellow got to within one as Michelle Lang blasted one home from Casselman to make it 3-2 with just 1:14 showing on the clock.
Blue was having none of it as Carly Crump put the game on ice with just 20 seconds left in regulation from Sam Benoit taking the game 4-2 heading into the final two weeks of the regular season to remain undefeated.
Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Patti Mitton.
Up next: Red plays host to Blue in the first game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thurs., July 12, at 7 p.m. at the Chesterville Arena. Yellow welcomes Green in the night cap at 8 p.m.
