BROCKVILLE – The Winchester Hawks had two games this past week.
Hawks 4 Panthers 2: The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Palais des Sports in Embrun on Fri., Nov. 17, to take on the Embrun Panthers in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a big 6-2 win making it their fourth of the season but still were mired in the basement of the Martin Division. The Panthers were coming off a tough loss to the Ottawa West Golden Knights the previous night and looked to bounce back.
The Panthers sat in sole possession of third place but the Knights were just three points back in the fourth seed. The Hawks opened the scoring when Christophe Lemay snapped one home from Joel Driscoll at 2:43 of the opening period.
The Hawks made it 2-0 when Christophe Lemay lit the lamp for the second time at 6:04 on the power play from Driscoll and Fred Lemay. The Hawks took a three-goal lead when Noah Dioszeghy fired one to the back of the net from Kyle Kuehni and Dillon Clemen at 9:39.
The Panthers got one back when Marc Brosseau buried one from Jeremy Barrie and Joey Larcher at 12:54 but the Hawks took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The Hawks made it 4-1 when Kuehni blasted one home from Evan Landry and Miguel Pare at 6:22 of the second period.
The Panthers peppered the net outshooting the Hawks 12-5 but the Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. The Panthers got to within two as Noah Johnston slammed one home while screening the Hawks’ goalie on the power play at 2:43 from Michael Armstrong.
The Panthers owned the period again on the shot clock outshooting the Hawks 15-1 but the Hawks hung on to steal the victory 4-2, picking up their fifth win of the season. With the win, the Hawks move to within three points of the seventh-place Char-Lan Rebels. Picking up the victory in the Hawks’ goal was Darien Johnson making 39 saves on 41 shots.
Hawks 6 Tikis 2: The Hawks travelled to the Brockville Memorial Centre to take on the Brockville Tikis on Wed., Nov. 15, in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a tough 5-3 loss to the Westport Rideaus after blasting the Ottawa West Golden Knights 9-5 in their previous game. The Hawks, however, sat in eighth place in the Martin Division with just three wins on the season.
The Tikis were in the same boat in the Richardson Division with just four wins in 23 games played. The Hawks opened the scoring at 5:41 of the first period when Kyle Kuehni snapped one home from Graeme Buffone to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks made it 2-0 when Kuehni fired home his second from Jordan Chagnon at 6:21. The Hawks made it 3-0 when Hunter Randell blocked a shot in his own end and found himself on a breakaway and he made no mistake at 15:38 while short-handed.
The Hawks took the 3-0 lead into the first intermission and outshot the Tikis 21-7 in the first period. Randell scored his second of the game at 3:29 of the second period from Chagnon and Dakota Seaman to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks made it 5-0 as Buffone blasted one home from Kieran Gaynor at 10:23 but the Tikis finally answered at 13:30. The Hawks took a 5-1 lead into the second intermission. The Tikis made it 5-2 at 9:54 of the third period but the Hawks put to end any idea the Tikis had for a comeback, as Jeremy Fadaoui slid one home from Kuehni and Ryan Lavallee at 14:06.
The Hawks went on to take the game 6-2 making it two wins in their past three games. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Darien Johnson making 41 saves on 43 shots.
