CHESTERVILLE—In the first game of the evening in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thursday night, Blue played host to Yellow and in the night cap it was Red taking on Black.
Blue 5 Yellow 2
The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League kicked off the night with the number one seed Blue versus the number two seed Yellow on Thurs., July 13, at the Chesterville Arena. Yellow went into the game sitting in second place with 13 points just three behind the first-place Blue team and looked to pull to within one with a victory.
Blue has stumbled a little over the past few weeks after starting the season with eight straight wins and lost their previous game to Red 4-1 as they looked to get back to their winning ways. Blue opened the scoring when Jaclyn Crump fired one to the back of the net from Carly Crump and Sam Benoit at 5:55 to take a 1-0 lead.
Blue made it 2-0 when Becca Alves snapped one home from Cinnamon Boulanger and Lindsay Cummins at 10:19. With time winding down in the opening frame, Blue struck again with just 34 seconds showing on the clock as Boulanger powered one to the back of the net from Cummins and Alves and took a 3-0 lead into the second period.
Yellow got to within two as Shannon McRae slapped one home from Jennifer Whitteker and Angie Van Gurp-Helmer at 8:45 of the second period. Blue restored their three-goal lead when Boulanger scored her second goal of the evening at 10:07 from Cummins and Rebecca Kennedy. Blue made it 5-1 at 11:02 as Boulanger completed her hat trick from Cummins.
Yellow got one back with just 41 seconds remaining in the sandwich frame as Jodi Hall pounded one home from Stephanie Shane to get to within three. Blue carried the 5-2 lead into the third period. The teams battled back and forth in the third period but neither were able to find the back of the net as Blue hung on for the 5-2 victory moving five points ahead of Yellow in the standings.
Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump.
Red 6 Black 4
In the second matchup of the night, Red played host to Black. Red went into the game in third place just two points behind Yellow for second and after Yellow lost their game earlier Red had a chance to catch Yellow with a win. Black has had trouble getting anything to work this season with only two wins but in every game they have been close.
Black opened the scoring when Kaila Beckstead scored an unassisted marker at the three-minute mark in the opening frame taking a 1-0 lead. Red knotted the affair at one when Lesley Ann Tupper lit the lamp from Sara Desjardins and Catia Dias.
Red took their first lead of the game when Geena Rose snapped one home from Marissa Imrie at 15:27. Red took the 2-1 lead into the second period. Black tied the game again as Karen Edward pounded one to the back of the net from Beckstead at 5:17 of the second period.
Black retook the lead at 8:49 as Sam Naish slapped one home from Edwards and Teresa Schoones to make it 3-2. Red squared the game at 12:34 as Desjardins rifled one to the back of the net from Tupper. Red took their second lead of the game when Kaitlyn Kerr snapped one from Imrie and Rose at 15:32.
Red took a slim 4-3 lead into the third period. Red took their first two-goal lead of the night as Tupper scored her second of the night from Imrie at 5:13 of the third period. Black didn’t give up and got back to within one as Schoones blasted one home from McRae at 8:59 to set up a close finish.
With the clock down to 3:02 Red put the finishing touch to Black’s comeback attempt as Kerr scored her second goal of the game from Desjardins and took the game 6-4 moving into a second-place tie with Yellow. Picking up the win in Red’s goal was Jennifer Byrne.
