The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers welcomed the Winchester Red Sox to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Wed., June 26, in the Upper Canada Little League. The Pioneers’ pitcher Dean Lapier battled through the rain to deliver a strike on this attempt. The game was called twice due to rain and thunder but they did manage to get it in. Unfortunately for the Pioneers they came out on the short end suffering a 13-9 loss.              Moore photo

WILLIAMSBURG —The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers were supposed to have two games this past week but their game on Tuesday night was postponed due to inclement weather. Their second game was against their bitter rivals, the Winchester Red Sox, on Wednesday night.

Red Sox 13 Pioneers 9

The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers welcomed the Winchester Red Sox to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Wed., June 26, in the Upper Canada Little League. The Pioneers were coming off two wins and a loss in a rare three-game week but were facing a team that had their number this year. The Sox took their last meeting in Winchester earlier in the season.

The Sox started things off with a bang scoring five runs in the top of the first but the Pioneers evened the score in the bottom of the inning as the teams took a five-all draw into the second inning.

The Pioneers only allowed four Sox batters to the plate in the top of the second of which one made the round trip. The Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the second after sending seven batters to the plate and took a 9-6 lead into the third inning. The Sox battled back to tie the game in the top of the third inning after scoring three runs.

The Sox’ defence also came through allowing only four Pioneer batters to the plate and none were able to score. The Sox scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning after sending eight to the plate retaking the lead 13-9.

The Pioneers had one chance to win the game in the bottom of the fourth but the Sox’ defence again held the Pioneers from scoring and took the game 13-9. The game had two rain delays and was called after the fourth inning due to the torrential downpours.

Scoring for the Pioneers were Nolan Henry with two and Isaac Cummins, Dean Lapier, Isaiah Summers, Tory Barnett, Parker Baker, Raiden Irvine and Brendan Shaver each scored singles. Pitching for the Pioneers were Henry in the first inning, Lapier in the second and third and closing out the game was Thomas Rae.
