EMBRUN – The Township of Russell are pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Ontario Arts Council through the Ontario Arts Presenters Projects. The grant will support the 2024 Photo Expo, creating greater community participation and showcasing local talent.

The Ontario Arts Presenters Projects supports Ontario-based presenter organizations, ad hoc groups and collectives led by volunteer community members, as well as municipalities, colleges and universities to present professional artists in all OAC-funded disciplines and to offer associated audience engagement activities. The program supports activities in communities with limited professional arts activity.

The 2024 Photo Expo invites photographers to submit their best photographs for a chance to have their work selected by an independent jury. Four (4) winning photographs will be chosen to be printed and displayed as outdoor public art along the recreational trail.

This year, in addition to having their work displayed, the selected photographers will each receive CARFAC (Canadian Artists Representation/Le Front des Artistes Canadiens) fees of $400 in recognition of their artistic contributions. As well, the winners and select honourable mention artists will receive a subscription to PhotoEd Magazine. This new initiative underscores the township’s commitment to valuing and supporting the arts within our community.

“We are excited to see the creativity of hobby, amateur, and professional photographers and to showcase their work to residents and visitors at the Autumn in the Country event on Sept. 14, 2024,” said Darren Pottie from the Russell Agriculture Society. “This grant from the Ontario Arts Council will allow us to enhance the Photo Expo and celebrate local talent in a meaningful way.”

The theme for this year’s expo is “Best Kept Secret.” Anyone from Canada can enter, however all images must have been taken within the Township of Russell boundaries. The jury will select winners for the following four categories: best youth (18 and under), best portrait, best landscape, and best overall.

Submissions and participation for this event are free. You can submit up to five (5) photos. Submissions for the 2024 Photo Expo will be accepted until Mon., Aug. 26, 2024.
