WINCHESTER – I don’t know what we did right, but it is difficult to disagree that the weather over the past three weekends has been exceptionally good, which is nice if you have yard work you want to do.

If you want to golf, however, the weather has been absolutely exceptional, and if you’re looking for a course to call home, or just want to see what many people are talking about, why not stop by Cloverdale Links, just off Bank St. (Highway 31), just north of Winchester.

According to Martin Patterson, the general manager at Cloverdale Links, the course opened this year on April 9, and as early as that seems, there were people just itching to get out and see how far and how straight the ball would go for them this year.

“It was good to get them out,” says Patterson, “But the only problem is, it was dry, but then it had gotten pretty wet, so we’ve had to pull carts off the course for a while. which was a deterrent for most people, because they do like to take a cart around the course.”

Fortunately, that problem was short lived, and things are back on track. Amazing what a little sunshine can do.

If you’ve never golfed at Cloverdale Links before, it might be time to see what they have to offer.  “I would suggest you come out, see what we’re all about,” said Patterson. “Then, figure out how you might take lessons, if you need lessons. We have rental clubs. You could practice on our driving range and use our chipping green, or practice on our putting green.

Cloverdale Links is a public course, which means that subject to availability of tee-off times, you can golf whenever it is most convenient for you. If you plan on golfing on a regular basis, you might want to consider a Player’s Pass, which not only gives you a reduced rate on greens fees, but which also carries with it several benefits, such as:

  • 7 Day Advance Booking
  • 10 per cent off Power Carts/complimentary pull carts
  • 10 per cent off merchandise in the Pro shop (excluding golf balls and gloves)

“So, here’s the player pass, and its $275 and then your rate is $27.09 (18 holes),” said Patterson. “Regular price if you didn’t have the players pass, would be $43.95. So, you can see the significant savings.” (All prices plus HST.)

That’s not the only value-added benefit Cloverdale Links has to offer. Senior Benefit Days are every Monday and Tuesday all day (excluding holidays). Men and women golfers ages 55 or older receive a 25 per cent discount on green fees.

If you haven’t the time for 18, or even a quick nine, Cloverdale continues to showcase a “quick in and out special.” For $24.95 plus HST you can “Golf the Loop” (holes 1, 2 and 9) and hit a large bucket of balls.

It’s never too soon to start teaching the future of the game either. Youngsters ages 5 to 13 can play for free after 3 p.m. every day of the week with a paying adult. (One free child per paid adult green fee.)

And finally, Rewards Members play for free on their birthdays. If the course is closed on a player’s birthday, he or she can play for free six months to the day.

On their website (cloverdalelinks.com) the course is described as “your Scottish experience,” which means that Cloverdale’s rural layout mirrors the famous links tracks of Scotland. The course has wide fairways and large greens, which makes the course attractive for golfers of varying skill levels. The property is always lush and well-maintained, and measures 6,427 yards from the tips (5,830 yards from the white tees, 5,150 yards from the reds) and par is 71.

“Come out and experience it,” says Patterson. “It’s a lot of fun. You get to meet people. If you’re not a regular or you don’t have friends that want to go, come out and get hooked up with others that may not have a foursome. That’s how friends are accumulated.”
