Ravens win championship
The St. Thomas Aquinas Ravens Intermediate Boys’ basketball team won the PRSSAA championship on Tues., May 16. RUSSELL — The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Intermediate Boys’ Ravens basketball team welcomed the St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Falcons on Tues., May 16, for the PRSSAA championship game. The Ravens finished the season undefeated and took first place overall but in their first game against the Falcons the Ravens only won by a single point. The Falcons finished in second place just behind the Ravens with their only losses coming against their hosts.
The Ravens jumped out to a slim 12-10 lead after the first quarter with Johnny Costanzi leading the way with five points. The Ravens’ defence dominated the second quarter and their offence outscored the Falcons 9-3 taking a 21-13 lead into the dressing room at the half.
The Ravens’ offence kept the pressure on the Falcons in the third quarter and dumped in another 15 points led by Callum Tait with six points while the defence held the Falcons to 11. The Ravens took a 36-24 lead into the final quarter. The Falcons saved their best for the last quarter exploding for 20 points but the Ravens fought hard enough to keep ahead scoring 11 points. The Ravens squeaked out a 47-44 win, taking the PRSSAA championship.
Scoring for the Ravens were Matt Pietrkicwics with nine points, Costanzi, Kallum Birch, Kai Donnelly and Tait each scored six, Brock Ballantyne with five, Aiden Nyentap with four, Dylan Clune with three and Aidan Harps with a deuce.
