MORRISBURG – “I think it’s a civic duty,” Marc St. Pierre said.
With the upcoming Oct. 24 municipal election, St. Pierre is hoping to become the Municipality of South Dundas’ next deputy mayor. He was a first-time councillor for South Dundas from 2014 to 2018.
“What made me decide to run? I think it’s always something that’s been in the back of my mind,” St. Pierre said. “I was on council. I decided to take a step back, put it in the back of my mind, and I’ve always had that intention to get back on council at some point in time. A lot of people reached out to me as well, so it kind of gave me a little bit of a push to do it, but I like it.”
The positions of mayor and deputy mayor include time spent on the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) council and various committees. St. Pierre said he chose to run for deputy mayor because he wants to be involved at the county level.
“County council has always had a good group of mayors and deputy mayors representing at the county level, so that’s another thing I think I really want to get involved in, is on the county level,” he said. “There are items like the school closings. I think the county has stepped up in terms of being proactive and, again, that’s something I would like to be part of, to be in on trying to keep our rural schools open and making them viable and trying to push to get the right programs in our schools.”
St. Pierre said he’s concerned about the township’s aging infrastructure, noting that he wants to be involved in tackling the issues facing South Dundas. He said he’d like to get involved in economic development, as well.
“We have some issues that we’ve really got to address in terms of infrastructure and economic development,” St. Pierre said, noting the importance of having adequate infrastructure to accommodate ongoing population growth. “It also blends in with the recreational plan. You can’t just have a multi-purpose facility if you don’t have the infrastructure to run that facility. It’s all linked together.”
St. Pierre has a background in civil engineering. He’s worked for a land development company for roughly 30 years, working with both private and public sectors.
