WINCHESTER – A soup and sandwich lunch fundraiser was held at Winchester United Church on April 30, in aid of 2-year-old Adalyn (Addy) Myers. The Fellowship Committee at the church organized the event with the help of the congregation and other local churches were invited. There was a good response with donations and to date the final tally from that event is $1,928.
“It was wonderful to see the response of such a generous and caring community,” said church member Estelle Rose and thanks goes out to everyone who helped and donated.
Addy was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer, Wilms’ tumour, Stage 3, and has had one of her kidneys removed. During visits to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, she had seven radiation treatments at first and 10 chemotherapy sessions to date, and still undergoing further tests. The financial burden on her family has been quite a challenge – which includes travelling into Ottawa with parking expenses at CHEO, time away from work for her parents, in addition to the emotional turmoil any parent goes through when a child is ill, endures treatments or tests, no matter the severity of the condition.
This past weekend, family and friends rallied together – 63 registered participants for Addy’s Army in the CN Cycle for CHEO and raised just over $13-thousand. (Their goal was just $ 7,500, but they reached 174 per cent of their goal at $13,061.) Funds from the marathon are shared between oncology research at CHEO and the Ronald Macdonald House.
