OTTAWA – Earlier this month, Algonquin College reported that it was expecting to suspend 37 academic programs starting in September 2025 as it, like other colleges across Ontario, struggled to deal with a huge deficit due, in part to the federal cap on international students, a freeze on tuition, and provincial funding shortfalls. When this step was announced, it was reported that the list of cuts would be brought before the college’s Board of Directors on a meeting scheduled for Mon., Feb. 24, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
The meeting took place as scheduled and cuts to 41 programs were confirmed and approved by the Board, and as a result the following programs will not accept new students for the fall 2025 term and beyond.

Currently enrolled students and students admitted to their program for Spring 2025 will be able to complete their studies, provided they meet all the necessary academic requirements.
Some programs may have adjusted intake schedules or limited delivery formats. Learners who have applied to these programs will be contacted with additional details concerning next steps.
Algonquin had announced previously its intent to close its Perth, Ontario campus as of 2026. This closure was also confirmed by the Board on the Feb. 24 meeting. The campus will close at the end of the spring 2026 term with any remaining courses moved to Algonquin’s Ottawa campus.
Currently, there are only five programs offered at the Perth campus: Business-Agriculture, Practical Nursing, Practical Nursing-Pathway for Personal Support Worker, Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) (Honours), and Heritage Carpentry and Joinery.
Algonquin’s President and CEO Claude Brulé had earlier this winter reported the “unprecedented financial challenges,” the college was facing. Without intervention he warned that the college would incur a budget deficit of at least $60 million in 2025-2026, rising to $93 million by 2026-2027.
