EMBRUN – Russell Township Council had the distinct honour of presenting a Citizen Recognition Award to Dr. Darrell Menard, celebrating his outstanding service and unwavering dedication to the residents of our community.
Dr. Menard has long been a cornerstone of Russell, not only through his work as a respected physician but also as a passionate community leader who has made an impact both locally and internationally.
Having lived in Russell for many years, Dr. Menard has earned the admiration and gratitude of many. His devotion to the health and well-being of residents is evident in the countless hours he has spent caring for patients, whether treating illnesses or sports-related injuries, at any time of day or night. His work exemplifies a deep commitment to the health and welfare of the people he serves.
Dr. Menard’s contributions go far beyond the township, with numerous achievements on the international stage. One of the most notable was his role as a guide runner, helping visually impaired athlete Jacques Pilon win a Paralympic Gold medal. In addition, Dr. Menard served with distinction as a medical doctor during Canada’s peacekeeping mission to Bosnia, further underscoring his dedication to service in times of need.
In recent years, Dr. Menard has continued to contribute on a global scale, participating in several international Paralympic sporting events, providing medical support to Canadian athletes. He is also a personal mentor and inspiration in Aboriginal rights and freedoms, offering invaluable advice to those in need.
Closer to home, Dr. Menard has been a steadfast supporter of local causes. He has volunteered as a guest speaker and entertainer at various fundraising events, lending his support to community organizations such as the Kin Club, Curling Club, and Knights of Columbus. His generosity and willingness to give back to the community are just a few of the many qualities that make him a deserving recipient of the Citizen Recognition Award.
Dr. Darrell Menard’s legacy as a compassionate father, dedicated physician, accomplished athlete, Métis advocate, and selfless community volunteer has left an indelible mark on the Township of Russell, which is fortunate to count him as one of their own. His many contributions will continue to benefit Russell for years to come.
The entire Township extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Menard for his remarkable service, and proudly congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.
