Terry Tinkess Record Staff EMBRUN – In their final regularly scheduled council meeting of 2023, Russell Township agreed to the adoption of its 2024 budget. The budget reflects the council’s commitment to guiding the community through the many issues created by the current economic landscape. The council’s endorsement of report FS-26-2023 on Dec. 11, 2023, marks a significant step in addressing the dual challenges of rising interest rates and inflation. The 2024 budget includes a 4% tax increase. This measure was considered essential to being able to deliver valued services while not ignoring the continued development of the community. For the average household assessed at $350,000, this translates to an $88.17 increase in municipal taxes for 2024. The increase includes an additional 1% allocation for the future recreation complex, a key investment in the health and vitality of the community, as well as increased spending on road and sidewalk infrastructure network. “Despite facing a challenging economic environment, marked by higher costs of living, reduced grant funding and increased external costs outside our control, we are committed to ensuring financial stability for our township,” said Pierre Leroux, Russell Township Mayor. “Our growth revenues have played a crucial role in maintaining a controlled and predictable yearly increase.” The 2024 budget also addresses various community needs and improvements, reflecting the commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Russell Township. Key initiatives include enhancing local infrastructure, supporting development, and investing in community well-being. “Our 2024 budget reflects Russell Township’s resilience and foresight in ensuring sustainable growth and community well-being. Balancing immediate needs with long-term planning, it’s a strategic commitment to innovation, efficient service delivery, and maintaining our township’s unique character,” added Richard Godin, Chief Administrative Officer.
