CHESTERVILLE – The North Dundas Rockets picked up the victory in their home opener as they defeated the Cornwall Prowlers 7-3 in front of a crowd of approximately 350 at the Chesterville arena on Sat., Oct. 7.
The game, a Saturday afternoon matinee, was attended by Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan, North Dundas Mayor Tony Fraser, South Dundas Mayor Jason Broad, as well as the members of council for both North and South Dundas. The ceremonial puck drop was made by Sparky the fire dog.
The game was fast and physical, and the Prowlers got on the board first, with Tyren Boots beating Rockets’ goaltender Matt Jenkins, with only one second remaining in the opening period.
In the second period, the two teams continued to battle back and forth, with the Rockets on two goals from Derec Boudreau, taking the lead, only to have Cornwall tie things up on a goal by Layne Gouin.
The Rockets would regain the lead before the end of the second period on a goal by Shawn Moors before breaking things open in the third with goals from Michael Macnamee (two), Brett Gustavsen and Nik Paas. David Chevrier would round out the scoring, picking up Cornwall’s third goal with just under 90 seconds remaining in the game.
Penalties weren’t that much of an issue, with only 13 penalties, all minors, being called, eight to North Dundas and five to Cornwall. The Rockets were zero for five on the powerplay but did have a shorthanded goal. The Prowlers were two for eight on the powerplay.
The Rockets’ next game is a return match with the Prowlers on Sat., Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Benson Centre in Cornwall.
