EMBRUN – The township of Russell recently announced the purchase of two new tanker trucks for the municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services.
“I want to thank council for their continued support and investment towards Fire and Rescue Services,” fire chief Bruce Armstrong said. “The technology of these new tankers introduces a safer truck for our firefighters and maintains our outstanding service to the community.”
The two new tankers, which are identical, were purchased for roughly $900,000. They are replacing the township’s former tanker trucks, which were roughly 22 years old and nearing the end of their lifespan. The expenditure was included in the municipality’s capital projects for 2021 and 2022.
“While this is a large purchase, proper long-term financial planning has allowed us the ability to maintain our high level of service, which in turn helps protect both our communities and those responsible with coming to our aid in the most difficult of times,” Mayor Pierre Leroux said.
Township officials said the tanker trucks are primarily used for their large-volume water tanks, which supply the fire engine with adequate water on-scene. These multi-purpose trucks can also act as main pumpers, if required, due to a small pump as part of their design. It was also noted that with identical models, training and operating procedures are standardized across the department. Most of the department’s firefighters have already completed their training with the new equipment.
One tanker has been assigned to Station 1 in Embrun, while the other has been assigned to Station 2 in Russell. Station 1 (613-443-5528) is located at 1128 Route 300 in Embrun, while Station 2 (613-445-3326) is located at 1195 South Russell Road in Russell. Firefighters needed
Currently, the township of Russell is looking for volunteer firefighters (part-time/on call) for their Embrun Station. At minimum, applicants must be 18 or older, live in the area of the Embrun Fire Station and within the township itself, carry a valid Ontario “G” class driver’s licence with an excellent Driver Abstract, have access to a vehicle, complete a valid and negative Criminal Record Check, and be physically fit and able to perform sustained and intense physical effort.
“As a member of the township of Russell Fire and Rescue Services, you will be responsible for responding to emergency calls requiring firefighter tactics, medical aid, rescue operations, and hazardous materials emergencies. Firefighters are also involved in delivering fire safety messaging and public education, as well as participate in various volunteer activities within the community,” the job announcement stated. “This profession can entail performance under conditions of physical and mental stress and involve personal stress that requires dedication and resilience; however, satisfaction is rewarded by serving and protecting life, the community, the environment, and working closely in a team environment.”
