CASSELMAN—The Casselman Vikings played a pair of games this past week as they travelled to Ottawa on Tuesday night to take on the Ottawa Jr. Canadians and welcomed the Alexandria Glens on Thursday night.
Vikings 3 Glens 1
The Casselman Vikings welcomed the Alexandria Glens to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Thurs., Jan. 16, in the CCHL2. The Vikings went into the game in fourth place in the Martin Division with 40 points, seven points behind the Ottawa Jr. Canadians in third and five points ahead of the Winchester Hawks in fifth place.
The Vikings were coming off a big 7-2 victory over the Canadians in their previous game and looked to keep the ball rolling. The Vikings opened the scoring when François Drouin scored his 20th goal of the season at 15:05 unassisted taking a 1-0 lead.
The Glens outshot the Vikings in the opening frame 7-6 but trailed 1-0 on the score board heading into the first intermission.
The Vikings took a two-goal lead when Frédérick Gagnier scored his ninth of the season from Shane Spencer at 4:29 of the second period.
The Glens cut into the Vikings lead at 14:10 on the power play but the Vikings regained a two-goal lead at 14:47 as Xavier Léveillé lit the lamp for his third of the season from Mathieu Talbot. The Vikings took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Glens pushed to close the gap but the Vikings’ were able to hold them off as the clock wound down in the third period and took the game 3-1. The Glens outshot the Vikings 27-25.
Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 26 saves.
Vikings 7 Canadians 2
The Casselman Vikings travelled to the Earl Armstrong Arena in Ottawa to take on the Ottawa Jr. Canadians on Tues., Jan. 14, in the CCHL2. The Vikings picked up their first win of 2020 last weekend beating the Arnprior Packers but lost to the second place Embrun Panthers in their next game. The Vikings made a few little tweaks at the trade deadline adding Shane Spencer for his second tour of duty and Jeremy Cyr from the Perth Blue Wings.
The Vikings opened the scoring when Jason Cossette fired home his 16th goal of the season from François Drouin at 4:29 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Vikings made it 2-0 when Drouin scored his 17th of the season from Zachary Fournier and Shawn Patterson at 9:01.
The Canadians cut the deficit in half just 30 seconds later but the Vikings restored a two-goal lead when Patterson ripped home his 10th of the season from Adam Paquette and Shane Spencer at 14:34 making
it 3-1.
The Canadians closed the gap to one again at 16:02 but the Vikings retook a two-goal lead when Alexandre Charlebois sniped his 11th of the season from Fournier and Paterson in the power play with just seven seconds remaining in the opening frame. The Vikings took a 4-2 lead into the first intermission.
The Vikings made it 5-2 when Frédérick Gagnier scored his eighth of the season from Brendon Watson and Joshua Desjardins at 13:34 of the second period. The Vikings took a four-goal lead when Drouin scored his second of the season and 18th of the season from Patterson and Fournier at 17:15. The Vikings took a 6-2 lead into the second intermission. The Vikings were a little too much for the Canadians in this game and at 13:43 of the third period, Drouin completed his hat trick scoring his 19th of the season while shorthanded from Cossette.
The Vikings held on for a 7-2 victory and hoped
it was the swing in momentum they have been looking for the past month and a half. The Vikings outshot the Canadians
37-21.
Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 19 saves.
