WINCHESTER—The Winchester Hawks had a busy week with three games as they travelled to Ottawa on Tuesday night to take on the Canadians, to Embrun on Friday night to take on the Panthers and welcomed the Westport Rideaus on Saturday afternoon. 

Hawks 6 Rideaus 4

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Westport Rideaus to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Sat., Dec. 7, in the CCHL2. It was a busy day for the Hawks after coming off a tough 3-1 loss to the Embrun Panthers the previous night as they hosted the Rideaus and then took part in the Winchester Parade of Lights later in the evening. 

The Hawks were looking to get back in the winning column after dropping their previous two games and three of their last four. The Rideaus opened the scoring at 5:35 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. 

The Hawks tied the game when Nolan Geurtin scored his first goal of the season from Marco Haw at 10:13. The Hawks took their first lead of the game when Danny Johnson scored his sixth of the season from Kyle Fleming and Graeme Buffone at 17:15 and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. 

The Rideaus owned the second period scoring three consecutive goals at 51 seconds, 17:11 on the power play and again at 18:07 on the same power play. The Hawks cut the deficit by one as Ryan Nielson snapped home his fourth of the season from Guertin and Johnson on the power play with just two seconds remaining in the middle frame. 

The Rideaus took a 4-3 lead into the second intermission. The Hawks tied the game at 10:28 of the third period as Noah Weatherall scored his third of the season from Haw and Kyle Kuehni. The Hawks took their second lead of the game when Kuehni scored his ninth of the season unassisted with just 2:02 remaining in regulation. 

The Rideaus tried to get their goalie to the bench in favour of an extra attacker but the Hawks hemmed them in their own zone and with just 50 seconds remaining, Kuehni scored his second of the game and 10th of the season from goalie Lucas Devries. The Hawks hung on for a 6-4 victory. The Rideaus outshot the Hawks 41-35. 

Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Devries, making 37 saves.

Canadians 3 Hawks 2

The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Earl Armstrong Arena in Ottawa to take on the Ottawa Jr. Canadians on Tues., Dec. 3, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game sitting in the fifth seed in the Martin Division and have been on a slight downward slide. 

The Canadians opened the scoring at 8:46 of the first period on the power play taking a 1-0 lead. The Canadians took a two-goal lead at 13:25 on another power play and carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. 

The Hawks cut the deficit in half when Kyle Fleming scored his 11th goal of the season unassisted while shorthanded with just 15 seconds remaining in the second period. The Canadians took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. 

The Hawks knotted the affair at two when Marco Haw scored his 10th of the season from Danny Johnson and Ryan Nielson on the power play at 6:06. The Canadians retook the lead at 10:22. 

The Hawks pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker late in the game but the Canadians didn’t allow the game-tying goal as they hung on for a 3-2 victory. The Hawks dominated the shot clock outshooting the Canadians 35-22. 

Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making 17 saves.
