COBDEN—The Casselman Vikings played two games this past weekend as they welcomed the Perth Blue Wings on Thursday night and travelled to Cobden on Saturday night to take on the Whitewater Kings.

The Casselman Vikings travelled to the Cobden Arena on Sat., Oct. 5 to take on the Whitewater Kings in the CCHL2. The Vikings were coming off a game that they led by four goals, only to see that lead evaporate in the third period, and just eeking out a 5-4 victory in overtime against the Perth Blue Wings. 

The Vikings sat at the top of the Martin Division just one point up on the Ottawa West Golden Knights. The Kings were coming off a tough 11-3 loss to the Winchester Hawks the previous night and looked to move out of the basement in the Richardson Division. 

The teams battled to a scoreless first period with the Vikings outshooting the Kings 14-10. The Vikings took the first lead of the game as Alexandre Charlebois scored his second goal of the season from Jason Cossette and Shawn Patterson at 9:58 of the second period. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission. 

The Vikings made it 2-0 when Nicolas Chartrand scored his second of the season from Cossette and François Drouin at 4:51 of the third period on the power play. 

The Kings got to within one at 5:54 but the Vikings restored their two-goal lead as Zachary Power scored his third of the season from Cossette and Patterson at 16:30. The Vikings closed out the scoring when Mathieu Talbot slammed home his fourth of the season from Patterson and Frederick Gagnier at 17:46. 

The Vikings took the game 4-1 to move into sole possession of first place in the Martin Division. The Vikings outshot the Kings 34-23. Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Zachary Racine making 22 saves.

Vikings 5 Blue Wings 4 (OT)

The Casselman Vikings welcomed the Perth Blue Wings to the J. R. Brisson Complexe on Thurs., Oct. 3, in the CCHL2. The Vikings went into the game with a share of first place in the Martin Division with the Ottawa West Golden Knights, with seven points and looked to move back into sole possession of first place. 

The Blue Wings sat in second place in the Richardson Division with six points. The Vikings opened the scoring when Nicolas Chartrand scored his second goal of the season from William MacDonald and François Drouin just 2:29 into the first period and carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission. 

The Vikings took a two-goal lead when Alexandre Charlebois scored his first goal as a Viking just 1:10 into the second period on the power play from Shawn Patterson. The Vikings took the 2-0 lead into the second intermission. 

The Vikings made it 3-0 when Zachary Power scored his second of the season from Patterson and Charlebois just 17 seconds into the third period. Patterson scored his first of the season at 1:29 while shorthanded and unassisted to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead.

The Vikings seemed to have the game under control but the Blue Wings cut into the deficit at 9:26 to make it 4-1. The Blue Wings got to within two just 23 seconds later and within one at 13:40. The Blue Wings knotted the affair at 13:59. 

Neither team was able to score before the end of regulation so the game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. The Blue Wings out shot the Vikings in the overtime frame but at 3:38 the Vikings defenseman, Samuel Labre snapped home his second of the season from Patterson and Jason Cossette taking the game 5-4. 

With the win, the Vikings moved into sole possession of first place in the Martin Division. The Vikings outshot the Blue Wings 38-32. Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nicholas Campbell making 28 saves.
