Puck drops on 2019 season for the Hawks

STITTSVILLE—The Winchester Hawks began the CCHL2 regular season this past weekend with a pair of games as they welcomed the Char-Lan Rebels on Friday night and travelled to Stittsville on Sunday afternoon to take on the Richmond Royals.

The Winchester Hawks travelled to the CARDELREC Recreation Complex in Stittsville on Sun., Sept. 22, to take on the Richmond Royals in the CCHL2. The Hawks opened their regular season with a 3-2 victory over the Char-Lan Rebels and looked to start the season 2-0.
The Hawks opened the scoring when Danny Johnson scored his first goal of the season from affiliate player, Dylan Holroyd and Nolan Guertin at 6:33 of the first period. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Holroyd scored his first of the season at 10:32 of the second period from Ryan Nielson and Kyle Kuehni giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead. The Hawks made it 3-0 when Kuehni scored his second of the season from Jacob Giacobbi and Johnson at 11:32. The Hawks took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Hawks took a four-goal lead, when Kyle Fleming scored his first of the season from Marco Haw and Nielson at 14:15 of the third period. The Hawks closed out the scoring when Haw scored his first of the season from Johnson and Kuehni with 2:44 remaining in the games.
The Hawks hung on for a 5-0 convincing victory. With the win, the Hawks moved into a first-place tie with the Ottawa Jr. Canadians in the Martin Division. The Hawks outshot the Royals 47-26. Picking up the shutout in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making 26 saves.

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Char-Lan Rebels to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Sept. 20, for their CCHL2 home opener. The Hawks went through the preseason with a record of 3-2 and looked to continue their winning ways.
The Hawks hosted a pre-game ceremony introducing the players and a ceremonial puck drop. Deputy mayor, Al Armstrong introduced the players and five members of the North Dundas Minor Hockey Association dropped the ceremonial puck.
The Rebels opened the scoring just 1:08 into the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Hawks outshot the Rebels 12-7 but trailed 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The Hawks tied the game at 13:06 of the second period as Kyle Green scored the Hawks’ first goal of the season from Colby Byrne-Shaw. The Hawks took their first lead of the game when their captain, Kyle Kuehni scored his first goal of the season from Ryan Nielson and Marco Haw at 15:31 on the power play. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Hawks found themselves shorthanded about six minutes into the third period but Bradley Wells scored shortie at 14:13 to make it 3-1. The Rebels pulled their goalie with just under a minute remaining in favour of an extra attacker and were able to make it work but it only left them with five seconds showing on the clock.
The Hawks didn’t allow the Rebels to get in their end, as they took the game 3-2 winning their first game of the regular season. The Hawks outshot the Rebels 38-34. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making 32 saves.
