Pioneers’ season ends
The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers welcomed the East Nepean Eagles to the Morrisburg Ball Park on Tues., Aug. 20, for the Ontario District 2 Little League’s quarterfinal. The Pioneers led the game heading into the sixth inning but the Green Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth forcing a seventh inning, played the next day due to darkness. MORRISBURG—The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers played a quarterfinal game this past Tuesday/Wednesday as the welcomed the East Nepean Green Eagles.
Green Eagles 11 Pioneers 8
The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers welcomed the East Nepean Eagles to the Morrisburg Ball Park on Tues., Aug. 20, for the Ontario District 2 Little League’s quarterfinal. The Pioneers finished the regular season in fourth place with six wins, five losses and one tie, while the Green Eagles finished in fifth place, three points back of the Pioneers.
The Green Eagles opened the scoring with a single in the top of the first inning but left runners in scoring positions. The Pioneers loaded up the bases in the bottom of the first but were unable to score.
The Pioneers’ defence came up big in the top of the second allowing just one of the Green Eagles’ runners on the bags. The Pioneers took advantage scoring three runs in the bottom of the second but left a runner on third base.
The Pioneers took a 3-1 lead into the third inning. The Green Eagles went three up and three down in the top of the third inning and again, the Pioneers scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third taking a 6-1 lead into the fourth inning.
The Green Eagles answered wth four runs in the top of the fourth inning getting to within one run of the Pioneers. The Pioneers increased their lead to two, scoring a single in the bottom of the fourth. The Green Eagles added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning tying the game at seven.
The Eagles got their first runner to third base in the top of the sixth inning but the Pioneers defence shut them down. The Pioneers follow script getting their first runner to third but they were unable to score.
With the time limit expiring and the threat of darkness, the game was called with a tie. The remainder of the game would have to be decided the following night starting at the top of the seventh inning. The Pioneers got into trouble in the top of the seventh allowing four runs.
The Pioneers put up a valiant attempt but were only able to score a single run, leaving two runners in scoring position. The Pioneers came up three runs short dropping the affair 11-8. With the loss, the Pioneers’ season came to an abrupt end.
The Eagles moved on to take on the Carleton Russell Aces who beat them in the semifinal. The Aces then moved into the championship game against the Glebe Giants and took that game 5-2 claiming the championship.
Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Kayne McCadden with two, Colin VanHoof, Ben Lapier, Emmyt Fetterly, Spencer Barclay, Ethan Cummins and Lucas Menard all scored singles. Pitching for the Pioneers were Lapier with 44 pitches, VanHoof with 45 and Fetterly with 26.
