Blue 3 Red 2
In the first game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s round-robin playoffs, Blue played host to Red on Thurs., Aug. 8, at the Chesterville Arena. Both Blue and Red won their opening games of the first round-robin so they were battling to see who could jump into sole possession of the number one seed. Blue finished the regular season with a slim one-point lead over Red so there was a little animosity in this game.
Red jumped out to the lead early as Jessica Rutley swatted one home from Laura Melenhost at 5:59 of the first period. Blue knotted the affair when Laila Beckstead lit one up unassisted at 12:19. Neither team was able to take the lead before the clock wound down in the opening frame, so the teams took the one-all draw into the second period.
Red retook the lead when Steph Dafoe batted one to the back of the net from Michelle Lang just 40 seconds into the second period. Red’s defence was able to hold the powerful Blue offence off the board and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Blue tied the game at 5:55 of the third period as Beckstead scored her second goal of the game from Jennifer Whitteker. Blue kept the pressure on and with 5:58 remaining in the game, Laura Rushford slammed one home from Kara Bartholomew taking their first lead of the game.
With the clock winding down to about 48 seconds remaining, it had appeared that Red had tied the game but the goal was called back because of a high stick making contact with the ball. Red disputed the call but it was still waved off. Blue hung on for a slim 3-2 victory.
With the win, Blue has punched their ticket to the A final with two wins, while Red will have to beat Green next week to qualify for the A final. Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Olivia Salmon and suffering the loss in Red’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin.

Green 5 Yellow 1
In the second game of the evening in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s round-robin playoffs, Yellow welcomed Green. Both teams suffered losses in the opening games of their first round-robin match-ups; so the winner of this game would capture home floor advantage in the B final or move up to the A final, if they could string two wins together with a win this week and next week.
Green opened the scoring when Carly Crump snapped one home at the 15-minute mark of the first period from Karen Edwards taking a 1-0 lead. Green took a 1-0 lead into the second period.
Green made it 2-0 when Edwards ripped one home from Jackie Morris just 27 seconds into the second period. Yellow cut the deficit in half when Patti Hall pounded one to the back of the net from Sam Benoit and Alex Roach at 4:12.
Green restored a two-goal lead when Carly Crump scored her second of the game from Jaclyn Crump with just 40 seconds remaining in the middle frame, and took a 3-1 lead into the third period. Green put the game out of reach when Carly Crump completed her hat trick just 25 seconds into the third period from Morris.
Green closed out the scoring when Morris slid one home from Jaclyn Crump and Carly Crump at 4:25. Yellow had no answer as Green took the game 5-1, handing Yellow their second loss of the round robin. Green is now tied with Red after two games of the round robin, as both teams now have the chance to make it to the A final.
Picking up the win in Green’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Terri Smith.
