OTTAWA—Williamsburg Senior Pioneers played two games this past week as they welcomed the Mississippi Whitecaps on Monday night and travelled to Ottawa to take on the Glebe Seniors on Wednesday night.

Glebe 8 Pioneers 6

The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers travelled to Brewer Park in Ottawa to take on the Glebe Seniors on Wed., July 31, in the Ontario District 2 Little League. The Pioneers were coming off an impressive come-from-behind 9-8 victory over the Mississippi Whitecaps and had a chance to break a tie between them and the Brockville Braves to move into sole possession of third place in the standings. 

The Pioneers opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning. The Glebe loaded up the bases in the bottom of the first but the Pioneers’ defence held them on base taking a 1-0 lead into the second inning. 

The Pioneers went three up and three down in the top of the second; two by way of strikeouts. The Glebe carried the momentum into their half of the inning scoring the maximum five runs in the bottom of the second taking a 5-1 lead into the third inning. 

The Pioneers got a runner to third base in the top of the third but were unable to score. The Glebe only got four batters to the dish in the bottom of the third and were unable to score. 

The Pioneers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning but hit into a double play ending the threat. The Glebe scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and took a 7-1 lead into the fifth inning. 

The Pioneers got one run back in the top of the fifth but the Glebe matched that scoring one in the bottom of the inning taking an 8-2 lead into the sixth inning.

The Pioneers were looking for their second comeback win in a row and it looked good early in the top of the sixth scoring three of their first four batters. The Pioneers scored a single to get within two runs, but were unable to take the game as the Glebe took the win 8-6. 

Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Nolan Henry, Brendan Shaver, Colin VanHoof, Spencer Barclay, Kayne McCaden and Colby Latulippe all with singles.

Pioneers 9 Whitecaps 8

The Whitecaps opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning but the Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead into the second inning. 

The Pioneers struck out all three Whitecap batters in the top of the second inning but were unable to take advantage in the bottom of the second getting five batters to the dish and leaving two runners in scoring position. 

The Whitecaps found their bats scoring the maximum five runs in the top the third inning. The Pioneers scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. The Whitecaps took a 6-5 lead into the fourth inning. 

The Whitecaps scored a single in the top the fourth inning but the Pioneers’ defence came up huge after the Whitecaps loaded the bases. The Pioneers loaded up the bases in the bottom of the fourth but were unable to score as they trailed 7-5 heading into the fifth inning. 

The Whitecaps went three up and three down in the top the fifth but the Pioneers failed to take advantage leaving the bases juiced in the bottom of the inning. 

The Whitecaps took a three-run lead in the top of the sixth scoring a single and looked to be heading to a victory. 

The Pioneers had other thoughts scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull off a come-from behind 9-8 victory. With the win, the Pioneers moved into a fourth-place tie with the Brockville Braves. 

Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Colin VanHoof with three, Ben Lapier with a pair and Nolan Henry, Spencer Barclay, Kayne McCadden and Kolby Latulippe all scored singles.

The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers travel to the Heritage Ball Park in Ottawa to take on the Orleans Red Sox on Wed., Aug. 7, at 8:30 p.m. and welcome the Glebe Seniors to the Morrisburg Ball Park on Thurs., Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. The Pioneers then travel to the Patenaude Ball Park in Embrun on Sun., Aug. 11, to take on the Carleton-Russell Aces at 7 p.m.
