CHESTERVILLE—The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League kicked off week 13 with a pair of matchups as Red welcomed Yellow in the opening game and Green was the host to Blue on Thursday night.
Red 5 Yellow 2
In the first game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey on Thurs., July 11, at the Chesterville Arena, Red played host to Yellow. Red went into the game three points behind first place Blue and Yellow led Green by just one point in third place.
Red opened the scoring when Theresa Schoones pounded one to the back of the net from Marlee Grady and Stephanie Shane just 2:24 into the first period taking a 1-0 lead. Red made it 2-0 when Laura Melenhorst slapped one home unassisted at 6:24.
Yellow cut the deficit in half when Angela Seely slid one to the back of the net from Cinnamon Boulanger at 9:04. Red added another at 16:22 as Grady sniped one from Angie Helmer and took a 3-1 lead into the second period.
Red made it 4-1 when Schoones scored her second of the night from Grady and Shane just 27 seconds into the second period. With time winding down in the middle frame, Alex Roach scored on a breakaway with just 11 seconds remaining from Mackenzie Thomas.
Red took a 4-2 lead into the third period. Neither team was able to score for most of the final frame but with just 2:10 remaining, Red took a three-goal lead as Grady scored her second of the game from Melenhorst and Sam Naish. Red hung on to take the game 5-2 and moved to within one point of first place Blue.
Picking up the win in Red’s goal was Terri Smith (spare) and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Roxanne Crump.
Blue 7 Green 3
In the second game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, Green welcomed Blue. Blue went into the game in first place by just a single point after Red knocked off Yellow in the previous game while Green sat in fourth place just one point back of Yellow in third place.
Blue opened the scoring when Kara Bartholomew scored off a rebound from Marissa Imrie at 3:07 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. Green knotted the affair when Carly Crump rifled one to the back of the net from Janice Casselman and Jody Crump at 8:13.
Blue retook the lead when Bartholomew scored her second of the game from Kaila Beckstead and Lindsay Cummins at 14:13. Blue took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Blue made it 3-1 when Bartholomew completed her hat trick at 8:27 of the second period.
Green got back to within one, as Alison Erwin snapped one home unassisted at 11:07. It looked as though Green was going to take Blue down by just one into the final frame but with just 28 seconds remaining, Cummins lit the lamp from Beckstead with just 28 seconds remaining and took a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Blue made it 5-2 when Rebecca Kennedy tapped one home from Cummins and Beckstead just 1:52 into the second period. Green cut the deficit to just two as Carly Crump scored her second of the game unassisted at 5:04.
Blue retook a three goal lead when Bartholomew scored her fourth of the game from Cummins and Beckstead at the 12-minute mark. Blue wasn’t done just yet scoring another goal with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation as Beckstead slapped one to the back of the cage from Laura Rushford.
Blue took the game 7-3 and moved three points ahead of second place Red. Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Olivia Salmon and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Roxanne Crump.
