Pioneers pure gold

OTTAWA—The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers opened the playoffs on Monday night as they welcomed the South Ottawa Red Sox for a semi-final game and hosted the Ottawa West Mets in Ottawa on Wednesday night.
Pioneers 10 Mets 3
The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers travelled to the Pinecrest Ball Park in Ottawa on Wed., June 19, to host the Ottawa West Mets in the final of the B Division of the Ontario District 2 Little League. The Pioneers swapped home ball parks as the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park in Williamsburg was already booked up for the Junior Pioneers, so the Seniors played the host at the Mets’ home park.
The Pioneers were coming off an impressive 10-3 victory over the South Ottawa Red Sox and looked to take the B title. The Mets upset the Embrun Seniors 8-4 in their semi-final match to make it to the final. The Mets got runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning but the Pioneers’ pitcher, Ben Lapier sat three of them down before they could score.
The Pioneers, with some good base stealing by Nolan Henry, got on the board first with a single taking a 1-0 lead into the second inning.
The Mets went three up and three down in the top of the second and the Pioneers were able to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second taking a 3-0 lead.
The Mets scored a single in the top of the third but the Pioneers got that one back in the bottom half of the inning taking a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning.
The Mets scored their second run of the game in the top of the fourth but left two runners in scoring position. The Pioneers kept pace with a single in the bottom of the fourth taking a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning.
The Red Sox got just three batters to the dish in the top of the fifth inning and none of them made it on base. The Pioneers blew the game wide open, scoring the maximum five runs taking a 10-2 lead.
The Mets got one back in the top of the sixth inning for which the Pioneers had no answer in the bottom half. The Pioneers took a 10-3 lead into the Mets final at bat.
The Mets got their first runner to third base but the Pioneers shut the door after that, taking the game 10-3 winning the gold medal.
Scoring for the Pioneers were Nolan Henry with three runs, Spencer Barclay, Colin VanHoof, Kayne McCadden, Ethan Cummins, Olivia Mudde, Kolbey Latulippe and Raiden Foote each scored singles.
Pioneers 10 Red Sox 3
The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers welcomed the South Ottawa Red Sox to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Mon., June 17, for a semi-final playoff game in the Ontario District 2 Little League. The Pioneers finished the season with a record of 5-3 with a forfeited game and were in the seventh seed which gave them home-field advantage in the B Division.
The Red Sox finished their season with a 2-7 record and sat in 10th spot. The Red Sox loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but the Pioneers managed to escape the inning unscathed as pitcher, Ben Lapier sat down the next three batters with strikeouts. The Pioneers’ bats were hot as the first four batters were able to score in the bottom of the first, giving the Pioneers a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning.
The Red Sox scored a single in the top of the second but left the bases loaded to close the gap to three. The Pioneers got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second but were unable to cash in; however they held on to their 4-1 lead heading into the third inning.
The Red Sox went three up and three down in the top of the third and the Pioneers made them pay scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning taking an 8-1 lead.
The Red Sox scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and were able to hold the Pioneers at bay in the bottom, closing the gap to 8-3.
The Red Sox only got four to the plate in the top of the fifth inning as the Pioneers’ defence took over throwing three out. The Pioneers only got three to the dish in the bottom of the inning so the 8-3 score carried into the sixth inning.
The Red Sox went three up and three down in the top of the sixth and the Pioneers scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Time expired on the Red Sox as the Pioneers took the game 10-3 moving onto the finals. Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Kayne McCadden with three, Nolan Henry, Ben Lapier and Colin VanHoof each with two and Emytt Fetterly with a single.
