Senior Pioneers pick up first win at home

WILLIAMSBURG—The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers played just a single game this past week as they welcomed the Glebe Red Striped Giants on Friday night.

The Williamsburg Senior Pioneers welcomed the Glebe Red Striped Giants to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Fri., May 31, in the Little league District 2. The Pioneers were still searching for their first win of the season after dropping their first four games. 

The Pioneers held the Giants off the score sheet in the top of the first inning allowing just five batters to the plate. The Pioneers opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning taking a 3-0 lead into the second inning. 

The Pioneers pitcher, Colin VanHoof allowed a hit on the first batter but struck out the next three in the top of the second inning. The Pioneers scored the maximum runs allowed (five) in the bottom of the second inning taking an 8-0 lead into the third inning. 

The Pioneers’ defence came up big in the top of the third inning only allowing three batters to the plate with just one making it to first base. The third batter hit into a double play at short. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning taking a 10-0 lead into the fourth. 

The Giants only got three batters to plate again at the top of the fourth hitting into another double play. The Pioneers added another four runs in the bottom of the fourth taking a 14-0 lead. The Giants finally got on the board scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. 

The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth and took the game 16-2. With the win, the Pioneers move out of the basement into a two-way tie for tenth with the Giants. 

Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Kayne McCadden and Colin VanHoof with three each, Nolan Henry, Ethan Cummins, and McLean Machan with deuces and Spencer Barclay, Kolby Latulippe, Raiden Irvine and Brendan Shaver with singles. Pitching for the Pioneers were VanHoof for four innings and Emytt Fetterley for one inning.
