Passing the torch

The Brigadoons provided an eclectic selection of music to the delight of the approximately 200 people who joined Duncan at the Campaign Nomination Rally in Cornwall on May 1.

CORNWALL – From across Stormont Dundas and South Glengarry, people came to the Ramada Inn, in Cornwall, to attend the Campaign Nomination Rally for SDSG federal Conservative party candidate Eric Duncan on May 1.
An air of excitement permeated the room where approximately 200 people gathered to meet the Conservative candidate in the upcoming election, listen to the music of The Brigadoons and visit with old friends and make new ones. Campaign chairs Adrian Bugelli and Sam McDonell served as emcees for the occasion and introduced speakers, Bev Runions, Michael Deighton and current SDSG MP Guy Lauzon, who provided informative introductions on the candidate. Following these speeches, members of the South Glengarry Pipe Band piped Duncan to the podium where he provided those present with a short but comprehensive speech.
Duncan began by mentioning he was “honoured and humbled,” to stand as the Conservative party candidate in SDSG. The 31-year-old graduated from North Dundas District High School and attended Carleton University where he received his degree in Political Science. In his earlier remarks, MP Lauzon explained that Duncan began working for him while he was attending Carleton and Lauzon was caucus chair for the governing Conservative party. Duncan served the people of North Dundas as a municipal councillor and for two terms as mayor.
During his speech, Duncan thanked his family and friends for their support and assistance, with a special nod to Lauzon as he mentioned how dedicated the current MP has been to SDSG. Duncan continued that he was drawn to the Conservative party for a variety of reasons, including the opportunity to make life affordable for everyone and fiscal responsibility.
He pledged, if elected, to maintain a high level of service to the constituency, noting a need to protect agriculture, to work with municipalities in order to receive government projects for the riding, and to seek opportunities to bring ethics back into politics. This echoes some of Deighton’s comments as he introduced Duncan which included his ability to get things done while serving as NDDHS prime minister and during his municipal career and his community service, describing it as a selfless passion to serve others.
As Duncan concluded his comments, he mentioned looking forward to the coming campaign and his plans to be respectful toward the other candidates during it. The Brigadoons returned to the stage and provided additional musical numbers while Duncan visited with members of the audience.
Carolyn Thompson Goddard, grew up in Chesterville and attended North Dundas District High School. After completing her BA in Political Science at Carleton University she has worked as a medical secretary and library technician. In 2020 she graduated from Algonquin College with a diploma in Journalism and has been a reporter and column writer for The Chesterville Record for over 10 years.
