CASSELMAN—The Casselman Vikings just needed a single game this past week as they welcomed the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Tuesday night for game five.

The Casselman Vikings welcomed the Ottawa West Golden Knights to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Tues., March 12, for game five of the best of seven of the CCHL2 quarterfinal. The Vikings were coming off a tight 3-2 victory over the Golden Knights in their previous game to take a 3-1 series lead and with a win would eliminate the Golden Knights. 

The Golden Knights opened the scoring when Noah Haymes scored an unassisted goal at 4:01 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights made it 2-0 when Justin Jamer scored his fourth goal of the playoffs from Jack Haymes and Daniel Stratis at 12:25. 

The Vikings cut the deficit in half when affiliated player, Brendan Lynch scored his first of the playoffs from Mikael Bissonnette and Pierce Britton just 25 seconds later. The Vikings tied the game at two when Shawn Patterson scored his third of the postseason from Joel Hunt and Brady Cloutier at 14:34 on the power play. The teams took a 2-2 tie into the first intermission. 

Patterson scored his second of the game and fourth of the playoffs with 1:48 remaining in the second period from Hunt and Louis Chabot. The Vikings took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. 

The Vikings took a two-goal lead when Antonio Silenu scored his first of the playoffs from Lynch and Bissonnette at 3:17 of the third period. The Golden Knights got back to within one as James scored his second of the game and fifth of the postseason from Jack Haymes at 7:21 on the power play. 

Patterson completed his hat trick picking up his fifth goal of the postseason at 9:10 from Jason Cossette and Yanick Dicaire on the power play to give the Vikings a 5-3 lead. The Golden Knights’ Bobby Dempster scored his first of the playoffs at 16:07 from Jamer moving to within one of the Vikings. 

With time winding down in regulation and possibly their season, the Golden Knights pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker with just over a minute remaining but it was the Vikings’ Samuel Mattie finding the back of the yawning cage with just 33 seconds remaining, unassisted. 

The Vikings hung on for a 6-4 victory eliminating the Golden Knights with a 4-1 series victory. The Vikings move on to face the awaiting Ottawa Jr. Canadians. The Vikings outshot the Golden Knights 36-23. 

Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 29 saves and suffering the loss in the Golden Knights’ goal was Mitchell Bown.

After opening the series in Ottawa on Tuesday night, the Vikings welcome the Ottawa Jr. Canadians to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Thurs., March 21, for game two at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings then travel to the Earl Armstrong Arena in Ottawa to take on the Canadians on Sat., March 23 at 7:20 p.m. for game three. Game four will be in Casselman on Sun., March 24 at 3 p.m. The series heads back to Ottawa on Tues., March 26 at 7:20 p.m. for game five.
