CASSELMAN—The Casselman Vikings had a busy weekend with three games as they travelled to Ottawa to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Thursday night, travelled to Alexandria on Friday night to take on the Glens and welcomed the Athens Aeros on Sunday afternoon.
Vikings 5 Aeros 2
The Casselman Vikings welcomed the Athens Aeros to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Sun., Feb. 17, in the CCHL2. The Vikings went into the game in second place in the Martin Division, 14 points behind the first place Ottawa Jr. Canadians and seven points ahead of the Ottawa West Golden Knights.
The Vikings opened the scoring at 8:51 when Samuel Mattie scored his 14th goal of the season from Louis Chabot and Mikael Bissonnette taking a 1-0 lead. The Vikings took a two-goal lead when Bissonnette scored his fourth of the season from Mathieu Talbot with just 1:10 remaining in the opening stanza. The Vikings took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Vikings made it 3-0 when Frederick Gagnier scored his 19th of the season from Brady Cloutier and Yanick Dicaire on the power play at 3:46. The Vikings took a four-goal lead as Dicaire scored his eighth of the season from Shawn Patterson and Chabot at 6:10. The Aeros answered with a pair of goals at 9:38 and with 1:55 remaining in the middle frame on the power play. The Vikings took a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Vikings added a fifth goal when Samuel Labre scored his first goal of the season from Talbot and Joshua Peladeau at 4:30 of the third period. The Vikings held off the Aeros for the remainder of the third, taking the game 5-2.
With the win, the Vikings move back to within 12 points of the first place Canadians. The Vikings outshot the Aeros 36-20. Picking up the victory in the Vikings’ goal was Mathieu Chenier making 18 saves.
Vikings 3 Glens 2
The Casselman Vikings travelled to the Billy Gebbie Arena in Alexandria on Fri., Feb. 15, to take on the Glens in the CCHL2. The Vikings were coming off an impressive 6-3 win over the Ottawa West Golden Knights in their previous game and looked to move up the ladder in the Martin Division.
The Vikings picked up where they left off from the previous night as Mathieu Talbot opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the season from Joshua Peladeau and Gabrielle Rousselle at 2:21 taking a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings took a two-goal lead when Samuel Mattie scored his 13th of the season from Louis Chabot and Evan Boucher with just 1:12 remaining in the opening frame. The Vikings took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Glens cut the Vikings’ lead in half at 12:49 of the second period but with 2:27 remaining in the middle frame, the Vikings restored their two-goal lead as Shawn Patterson scored his 12th of the season from Yanick Dicaire and Rousselle. The Vikings took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Glens got to within one at 14:28 but that was as close as they could get as the Vikings took the game 3-2. With the win, the Vikings moved to within 12 points of the Canadians who lost to the Embrun Panthers earlier in the evening.
The Glens outshot the Vikings 43-35. Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 41 saves.
Vikings 6 Golden Knights 3
The Casselman Vikings travelled to the Barbara Ann Scott Arena in Ottawa on Thurs., Feb. 14, to take on the Golden Knights in the CCHL2. The Vikings went into the matchup in second place in the Martin Division, 16 points behind the Ottawa Jr. Canadians but just three up on the Golden Knights.
The Vikings opened the scoring just 1:55 into the first period as Jason Cossette scored his 16th goal of the season from Mathieu Talbot and Joshua Peladeau taking a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings made it 2-0 when Joel Hunt scored his 29th goal of the season from Cossette and Shawn Patterson at 11:59 on the power play. The Golden Knights cut the deficit in half at 12:43 but the Vikings restored their two-goal lead when Frederick Gagnier scored his 18th of the season from affiliated player, Ryan Williams and Brandon Legare at 13:07.
The Golden Knights got that one back 21 seconds later to make it 3-2. The Vikings again took a two-goal lead when Williams scored his first as a Viking from Gagnier and Legare at 17:17. The Vikings took a 4-2 lead into the first intermission.
The Golden Knights got to within one just 16 seconds into the second period. The Vikings tightened up their defence in the middle part of the second and with just 2:23 remaining, the Vikings took back their two-goal lead as Samuel Mattie scored his 12th of the season from Evan Boucher and Louis Chabot and took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
The Vikings scored the lone goal of the third period as Boucher scored his eighth of the season from Chabot and Peladeau on the power play at 6:59. The Vikings shut the door and took the game 6-3. With the win, the Vikings moved five points ahead of the Golden Knights and closed to 14 points behind the first place Canadians.
The Vikings outshot the Golden Knights 55-39. Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Nick Campbell making 36 saves.
