MORRISBURG—The Morrisburg Lions played two games this past weekend as they travelled to Carp to take on the West Carleton Inferno on Saturday night and welcomed the Vankleek Hill Cougars on Sunday afternoon.
Cougars 11 Lions 3
The Morrisburg Lions welcomed the Vankleek Hill Cougars to the Morrisburg Arena on Sun., Dec. 2, in the NCJHL. The Lions were coming off a three-all draw with the West Carleton Inferno the previous night picking up a single point moving to within three points of the Metcalfe Jets in third place in the West Division.
The Cougars opened the scoring just 1:18 into the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Cougars made it 2-0 at 4:25 and 3-0 at 5:07. The Lions got on the board at 15:22 as Kevin Doyle roofed one from Zenin Biron and Devon Burns but the Cougars answered right back at 16:48.
The Cougars took a 4-1 lead into the first intermission. The Lions cut the deficit to two when Burns scored just 12 seconds into the second period from Graham Robertson and Francis Chartrand. The Cougars made it 5-2 at 7:52 but the Lions got that one back as Cal Bilmer pounded one to the back of the net from Brandon Cameron and Hayden Hoerner at 8:14.
The Cougars made 6-3 at 10:32 on the power play and 7-3 at 15:50 and took that lead into the second intermission. It was all Cougars in the third, scoring four unanswered goals at 3:31, 7:50, 14:36 and 17:16 on the power play taking the game 11-3 handing the Lions their 13th loss of the season. The Cougars outshot the Lions 47-23 and suffering the loss was Riley Phillips.
Lions 3 Inferno 3
The Morrisburg Lions travelled to the W. Erskine Johnston Arena in Carp to take on the West Carleton Inferno on Sat., Dec. 1, in the NCJHL. The Lions sat six point ahead of the Inferno at the bottom of the East Division and had a chance to put some heat on the Metcalfe Jets in third place.
The Inferno opened the scoring at 13:55 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. The Lions tied the game when affiliated player, Kayne McCadden slapped one home from Devon Burns at 17:06. The Lions took their first lead of the game when Burns fired one home from Jacob Kendrick and Graham Robertson with 1:52 remaining in the opening frame.
The Lions took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Inferno tied the game just 2:09 into the second period but the Lions battled back as Francis Chartrand snapped one home from Brandon Cameron and Zach Leblanc at 14:34.
The Lions took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. The Inferno shocked the Lions tying the game at 13:44 of the third period. Neither team could score before the end of regulation so the game headed to a five-minute three on three overtime period.
In the extra frame, the Inferno outshot the Lions 4-3 but neither team could score the game winner as they settled for a three-all draw. The Lions outshot the Inferno 34-29. Playing in goal for the Lions was Riley Phillips making 31 saves.
