CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League entered the third round of their round robin playoff with two games as Red took on Green in the opening game of the night on Thursday and Blue played against Yellow.
Red 3 Green 2: In the opening game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thurs., Aug. 9, Red played host to Green in round three of the playoffs at the Chesterville Arena. Red and Yellow sat tied for second place with one win each while Green sat in the basement winless after two games.
A win would secure second place for Red and a meeting with Blue in the A final next week. Green shocked Red as they opened the scoring just 1:06 into the first period as Patti Hall fired one to the back of the net from Amber Saddlemire and Theresa Schoones to take a 1-0 lead.
Red wasted little time getting even as Kaila Beckstead snapped one to the back of the net at 5:56 from Sara Casselman. Red took their first lead of the game when Lesley Ann Tupper slid one across the goal line at 10:30 from Shaelynn Shay.
Red took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Red took a two-goal lead when Lindsay Feeley swatted one home from Jessica Rutley at 8:53. Both teams played a tight defensive game but neither were able to score before the horn went off to end the second frame.
The defensive play carried into the third period but with just 45 seconds showing on the clock Green got to within one as Saddlemire backhanded one to the back of the net from Marissa Imrie and Hall to make it 3-2.
Green held Red in their end but Red managed to keep the ball to the outside as time wound out. Red took the game 3-2 and will move on to the A final next week against Blue. Picking up the win in Reds’ goal was Julie Shaver and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin.
Blue 5 Yellow 1: In the second game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, the playoff leading Blue squad welcomed Yellow. Yellow could tie Red and Blue if they were able to pull off an upset but still would end up in there because of the head-to-head meeting with Red.
Blue looked to remain undefeated in the round robin portion of the tournament with a victory. It didn’t take Blue very long to get on the scoreboard as Carly Crump was sprung on a breakaway just 55 seconds into the first period and she made no mistake going low stick side from Jaclyn Crump taking a 1-0 lead.
Blue made it 2-0 when Kara Bartholomew pounded one home from the slot at 7:33 from Jaclyn Crump and Leigh Ann Dearing. Blue took a 2-0 lead into the second period. Carly Crump scored her second goal of the game at 8:23 of the second period unassisted to give Blue a 3-0 lead.
Blue took the 3-0 lead into the third period and added to it as Carly Crump completed her hat trick from Jaclyn Crump and Sam Benoit at 3:45. At the eight-minute mark of the final frame, Benoit snuck one to the back of the net from Lindsay Cummins and Bartholomew to give Blue a 5-0 lead.
Yellow spoiled Blue’s goaltender, Roxanne Crump’s shutout bid at 9:51 as Alex Roach sniped one from Jackie Morris but that was as close as they got as Blue took the game 5-1. With the win, Blue finished in first place in the round robin and will play Red for the A championship next week. Yellow will welcome Green in the B championship.
Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Patti Mitton.
Up next: Blue will play host to Red in the A final of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thurs., Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. and Yellow will welcome Green for the B final at 8 p.m.
