CHESTERVILLE — In the first game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s final week of the regular season Red played host to Yellow in the first game of Thursday night and Blue welcomed Green in their season finale.
Red 3 Yellow 3: The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League opened their night with Red playing host to Yellow on Thurs., July 19 at the Chesterville Arena. Neither team was moving up or down heading into their final game and will face each other in the opening game of the round-robin playoff format.
Red opened the score when Lesley Ann Tupper slid one home from Jessica Rutley just 2:02 into the first period taking a 1-0 lead. Red made it 2-0 when Tupper scored her second of the game at the 15-minute mark from Rutley and Emma Grady. With time winding down in the first period,
Yellow cut the deficit in half as Michelle Lang fired one to the back of the net from Heather Erwin and Janice Casselman with just 31 seconds remaining. Red took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Red restored their two-goal lead when Tupper scored unassisted at 13:10 of the second period and took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Yellow cut into Red’s lead when Jackie Morris slapped one home from Shannon McRae and Jessica Winters just 1:37 into the third period. Yellow knotted the game at three when Morris scored her second of the game with 2:37 remaining in the game.
Neither team was able to score the game winner as the time on the clock expired so they settled for a three-all draw. Playing in goal for Red was Julia Shaver and Patti Mitton for Yellow.
Blue 2 Green 0: In the second game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, Blue welcomed Green. Blue had secured first place about a month ago, the only question left is could they go the whole season without being beaten.
Blue had a chance for a perfect season but had to settle for a tie the previous week. Blue opened the scoring when Jaclyn Crump pounded one home from Carly Crump at 7:57 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead.
Blue took a 2-0 lead when Kara Bartholomew slipped one to the back of the net from Carly Crump and Kelly Francis at 13:06 and took the lead into the second period. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the middle frame carrying the 2-0 score into the third period. Green’s defence held Blue’s explosive offence off the board again in the third period but they couldn’t take advantage offensively as Blue hung on for the 2-0 victory.
The two teams will open the playoffs against each other after Blue finished first and Green finished in fourth. Picking up the shutout in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin.
