CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League featured two games this past Thursday night as Red played host to Blue in the opening game and Yellow welcomed Green in the night cap.
Red 3 Blue 3: In the first game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey league on Thurs., July 12, Red played host to Blue at the Chesterville Arena. Blue went into the game with a perfect 11-0 record and Red sat in second place and looked to hand the Blue squad their first loss of the season.
Blue opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the first period as Carly Crump hammered one home from Rebecca Alves and Kelly Francis to take a 1-0 lead. Blue made it 2-0 when Kara Bartholomew slid one to the back of the net from Cinnamon Boulanger and Lindsay Cummins at 6:47.
Red battled back with a goal at 17:03, when Jessica Rutley snapped one home from Kaila Beckstead and Lesley Ann Tupper to make it 2-1. Red tied the game with just 1:27 showing on the clock in the opening frame as Rutley netted her second goal of the game from Jen Whitteker. The teams took a two-all draw into the second period.
Both teams had some good scoring chances in the second period but neither were able to find the back of the net taking a 2-2 tie into the final frame. Red took their first lead of the game when Rutley completed her hat trick from Lindsay Feeley at 10:34. It looked like Blue was headed for their first loss of the season but with 1:13 showing on the clock Boulanger tied the game as she banged one home from Bartholomew.
The game ended in a three-all draw ending Blue’s winning streak at 11. Red’s goalie Julia Shaver and Blue’s Roxanne Crump battled it out in between the posts for the tie.
Yellow 6 Green 1: In the second game of the evening, Yellow welcomed Green. Yellow sat in third place in the league standings and Green sat in last place with a single win on the season. Green was a little short of players so they picked up Carly, Jaclyn and Roxanne Crump to be able to play the game.
Yellow opened the scoring when Alex Roach sniped one from Jessica Winters and Jackie Morris at 13:59 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Yellow made it 2-0 when Shannon McRae fired one home from Morris at 16:21 and 3-0 at 16:36 as Shannon McRae scored her second of the game this time unassisted.
Yellow made it 4-0 with just 32 seconds remaining in the opening frame as Winters lit the lamp from Alannah McRae and took that lead into the second period. Yellow kept the pressure on and made it sound, as Morris blasted one home from Janice Casselman and Shannon McRae at 2:50 of the second period making it 5-0.
Green finally got on the score sheet as Jaclyn Crump fired one to the back of the net from Theresa Schoones at 9:08 to cut the deficit to four. Yellow took a 5-1 lead into the third period. Yellow scored the lone goal of the third period as Winters scored her second of the game from Lindsay Waddell at 4:30.
Yellow took the game 6-1 and hope to carry the momentum into the last week of the regular season. Picking up the win in Yellow’s goal was Patti Mitton and suffering the loss was Roxanne Crump.
Up next: Red welcomes Yellow in the opening game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey league on Thurs., July 19, at 7 p.m. and Blue plays host to Green at 8 p.m. in the late game.
