BROCKVILLE — The Williamsburg Junior-Senior Pioneers played two games this past week as they welcomed the Kemptville #1 Wildcats on Monday night and travelled to Brockville to take on the #1 Braves on Tuesday night.
Pioneers 13 Braves 6: The Williamsburg Junior-Senior Pioneers travelled to Brockville on Tues., June 26, to take on the Brockville #1 Braves, in the Upper Canada Little League. The Pioneers went into the game in first place with just two losses on the season and looked to extend their lead into the standings.
The Pioneers got off to a good start scoring four runs in the top of the first inning taking a 4-0 lead. The Braves got two runners in scoring position but the Pioneers’ defence came up big not allowing either runner home in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers added three more runs in the top of the second inning and only allowed four Braves’ batters to the dish in the bottom of the second only allowing one on base. The Pioneers were unable to score in the top of the third inning but left runners on third and second base.
The Braves finally got on the scoresheet with a single in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 7-1 game. The Pioneers added two more in the top of the fourth inning but that woke up the Brockville squad as they scored the maximum five runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 9-6 game.
The Pioneers scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning taking a 13-6 lead. The Braves only got three batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth none of them making it to first base as the Pioneers took the game 13-6. With the win, the Pioneers moved to a 8-2 record in first place.
Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Brendan Shaver with three, Dean Lapier, Ryan Brodeur, Emytt Fetterly and Mclean Machan each scored twice and Nolan Henry and Kayne McCadden each scored singles.
Pioneers 6 Wildcats 5: The Williamsburg Junior-Senior Pioneers welcomed the Kemptville #1 Wildcats to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Mon., June 25, in the Upper Canada Little League. The Pioneers went into the game in a virtual tie with Cornwall #2 with 16 points and only two losses.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but the Pioneers’ defence came through not allowing any runs to score. The Pioneers scored a single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top the second inning with a single but the Pioneers retook the lead with a single in the bottom of the second 2-1. The Wildcats’ bats came alive in the top of the third scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
The Pioneers had no answer in the bottom of the third leaving two runners on the bags. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 5-2 but the Pioneers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning closing the gap to 5-4.
The Pioneers’ pitcher, Dean Lapier struck out three of the Wildcats next four batters giving his team a chance to tie or win the game in their last at bat. The Pioneers scored two runs to end the game as their first two batters made the round trip.
The Pioneers took the game with a narrow 6-5 victory moving into sole possession of first place. Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Brendan Shaver and Olivia Mudde with two each, Kayne McCadden and Ryan Brodeur each scored singles.
Pitching for the Pioneers were Brayden Barrie in the first inning, Emytt Fetterly in the second and two-thirds of the third, Nolan Henry for the other one-third of the third and Dean Lapier closed the game out in the fourth and fifth. Highlight of the night happened in the top of the second inning according to head coach, David Lapier, “The highlight for us was a towering three run home run Dean (Lapier) hit in the second inning. He missed the first two pitches by a mile and was down 0-2 in the count, then on the third pitch he smashed a huge home run over the left field fence that landed in a ladies front yard on the other side of the road. It was such a long home run that the other team’s parents clapped for him.”
