RUSSELL – The Russell Community Concert Band performed at the J.P. St. Pierre Building (library) in Russell on Thurs., June 15, under the direction of conductor David Wattie.
He led them in a variety of musical pieces ranging from the Game of Thrones theme to Birdland and Amazing Grace. The concert was originally scheduled for outdoors on the library grounds, but was moved inside due to the threat of inclement weather. About 25 audience members attended, and with the band members and library staff the building was filled with patrons and music.
The band was founded only eight years ago in 2009 as a charitable organization with the aim of increasing musicianship and musical enjoyment in and near Russell. The website says, “Our band is made up of many different skill levels. We are constantly seeking new concert band members and their instruments, never turning anyone away who wishes to continue improving his or her skills.”
The band can also give volunteer hours to high school students who wish to play. It offers free concerts to seniors’ residences, offers a free old-fashioned concert in the park each June; and helps other Russell organizations with their charitable aims by offering free concerts to help with fundraising.
The next concert is this Thurs., June 22, at Le Pavillon, 1122 Notre Dame St., Embrun, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., and a concert will be part of the Russell Heritage Festival on Sept. 23.
