RUSSELL — The Russell High School T-Wolves Intermediate Girls’ basketball team welcomed the St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Falcons on Mon., May 8, in PRSSAA. The T-Wolves went into the game with a win and three losses but a win in this game would put them back in the hunt.
The T-Wolves got off to a good start jumping out to a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. The T-Wolves kept the pressure on the Falcons and doubled them up 8-4 in the second period taking an 18-10 into the dressing room at the half. The Falcons battled back in the third quarter outscoring the T-Wolves 12-10 and the T-Wolves took a 28-22 lead into the final frame. The Falcons battled back and with just over two minutes remaining the score was 36-30. The Falcons scored a bucket and on their next possession scored a three-pointer to make it 36-35. With about 26 seconds remaining, the Falcons scored a deuce to take the lead by one. The Falcons bench-piled onto the floor but the T-Wolves managed to run through all the bodies and got down to the Falcons’ end. With about 5.5 seconds showing on the clock, the T-Wolves’ Tessa Peterson threw on up on a prayer and after one bounce off the rim the ball dropped, giving the T-Wolves a one point lead. The Falcons made it down court but failed to get a shot at the net as the T-Wolves took the game 38-17 in a barnburner. Scoring for the T-Wolves were Anna Shoeni with 16 points, Aryssa Henderson with 11, Peterson with seven and Brianna Tanguay and Laurel Pearson each with deuces.
